Chapter 3 - The Empty Locker

The morning sun filtered through the grimy frosted windows of the Grand Astoria’s employee locker room, casting long, dusty shadows across the rows of grey metal lockers. Chloe stood before her open locker, staring blankly at the single spare apron and a worn paperback novel resting on the bottom shelf. The heavy iron door had been unlocked easily; her combination lock had already been clipped and tossed into the recycling bin outside. A bright pink termination slip was taped directly over her small mirror, written in harsh, looping cursive that authorized her immediate firing for "gross insubordination and conduct unbecoming of staff."
She reached out and peeled the pink paper off the mirror, her fingers trembling slightly. The ink was still fresh. Someone had made sure this was waiting for her the exact moment she swiped her employee ID card at dawn. Except, her ID card hadn't worked at the turnstile. The security guard had simply pointed to a laminated sign taped to the glass wall bearing her name and photograph with the word BANNED stamped across it in red ink.
The heavy metal door banged open behind her, rattling against the adjacent locker with a deafening crash. Sarah, the head shift supervisor, walked in with her arms crossed over her dark uniform. Sarah’s face was a mask of cold disappointment, though a flicker of underlying pity danced in her eyes.
"I tried to warn you, Chloe," Sarah said, leaning against the doorframe. "Margaret Vance owns half the real estate in this district. Why on earth would you stick your neck out for an old lady in a wheelchair who doesn't even remember half the things she says?"
Chloe carefully folded her spare apron and placed it inside her canvas tote bag. She closed the locker door with a quiet, final click.
"She wasn't just an old lady, Sarah. She was being bullied," Chloe replied steadily, slinging the bag over her shoulder. "If I stayed silent then, I wouldn't have been able to look at myself in the mirror."
Sarah scoffed, shaking her head. "Morals don't pay for groceries, Chloe. And speaking of groceries, your landlord called the breakroom desk five minutes ago. He said your rent check bounced."
Chloe stopped dead in her tracks. Her blood ran cold. She had balanced her budget down to the last dollar; the rent check had cleared her account two days ago. Unless... unless someone had intervened.
"That's impossible," Chloe whispered, her voice tightening. "I deposited my paycheck on Tuesday."
"Well, the bank says otherwise," Sarah said, pulling a folded pink memo slip from her pocket and tossing it onto the wooden bench. "And it gets worse. The manager received an official legal notice from Vance Holdings an hour ago. They’re buying out the entire apartment complex on Maple Street. Effective immediately. Everyone’s being evicted for emergency renovations."
Chloe grabbed the memo slip, her eyes scanning the official letterhead. The seal of Vance Holdings gleamed in the harsh fluorescent light. It wasn't just a firing; it was a total, systematic dismantling of her life, orchestrated with ruthless efficiency by Arthur Vance and Lady Margaret. They weren't just punishing her; they were erasing her.
"They're doing this because of last night?" Chloe asked, the reality of their malice finally crashing down on her.
May you like
"They're doing this because you embarrassed them in front of the entire city elite," Sarah corrected grimly. "And honestly, Chloe? You should pack a bag and leave town today. Because whatever they have planned next, you won't survive it."
