Chapter 6 - The Executive Boardroom

The executive boardroom on the fortieth floor of the Vance Tower smelled of polished mahogany, expensive espresso, and impending doom. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the sprawling cityscape below, bathed in the harsh, unflinching light of midday. Around the massive oval conference table sat six senior board members, sweating profusely despite the climate-controlled air. At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge of the mahogany wood, his black shirt collar feeling tighter than a hangman’s noose.

The heavy double doors swung open with a soft, pneumatic hiss. Eleanor rolled into the room, flanked by two corporate security guards who looked more like federal marshals. Directly behind her walked Chloe, wearing her simple canvas tote bag over her shoulder, her dark waitress uniform replaced by a borrowed navy blazer that Eleanor had insisted she put on.

Arthur slammed his palm against the table, standing up so fast his leather chair tipped backward and crashed onto the carpet.

"What is the meaning of this circus, Eleanor?" Arthur roared, spittle flying from his lips. "You have no right bringing an outsider—let alone a fired restaurant server—into a confidential board meeting of Vance Enterprises!"

Eleanor rolled to the head of the opposite end of the table, stopping precisely in front of Arthur’s vacant seat. She placed her hands calmly on the armrests of her wheelchair, her gaze absolute and unyielding.

"Sit down, Arthur, before you embarrass yourself further," Eleanor said, her voice echoing in the dead silence of the room. "You have spent the last decade treating this company as your personal piggy bank, assuming that my age and my wheelchair rendered me entirely blind and deaf."

"That is a baseless accusation!" Arthur shouted, though his voice cracked at the edges. He looked around the table for support, but the other board members were frantically studying their leather-bound portfolios, refusing to meet his desperate gaze. "The board voted me CEO with a seventy percent majority! I built this conglomerate into what it is today!"

"You inherited a empire built on integrity and destroyed it with arrogance," Eleanor retorted sharply. She turned slightly and nodded toward Chloe. "Chloe, please open the leather folder resting on the credenza behind you."

Chloe stepped forward, her hands steady despite her racing pulse. She picked up a thick, red-bound auditing report bearing the official stamp of the federal securities commission.

"Page fourteen, paragraph three," Chloe read aloud, her voice clear and resonant in the cavernous room. "Unauthorized offshore wire transfers totaling forty-two million dollars, routed through shell companies registered under Lady Margaret’s maiden name."

Arthur’s face turned a violent shade of purple. He lunged forward across the table, his fingers clawing at the air as if he wanted to strangle the young woman. "You lying little tramp! I'll sue you into oblivion! I'll—"

Before Arthur could take another step, the boardroom doors flew open once again. Three federal agents in dark FBI windbreakers strode into the room, their badges gleaming under the recessed lighting.

"Arthur Vance?" the lead agent announced, holding up an arrest warrant. "You're under arrest for securities fraud, embezzlement, and racketeering."

Arthur froze, his arms suspended in mid-air. He slowly turned his head to look at Eleanor, whose expression remained a mask of profound, icy calm.

"You planned this," Arthur whispered, the venom draining out of him, replaced by a sudden, pathetic terror. "You staged the whole thing at the ballroom just to draw me out."

Eleanor smiled faintly, a ghost of humor touching her lips. "Arthur, you never understood true power. You thought power was about who sat in the chair. But real power belongs to the one who knows when to stand."
