Chapter 7

The black sedan’s engine hummed softly before pulling away down Maple Street, leaving behind an eerie silence that felt heavier than before. David slowly closed the front door, sliding the deadbolt back into place with a definitive click. He turned to face Sarah, who had walked over to the entryway table to steady herself against the polished wood.
“He knows we have it,” Sarah whispered, her voice trembling slightly now that the immediate danger had passed. “If we give it to him, he’ll destroy the only proof we have of what he did to Daniel. But if we don't, he’ll ruin our lives anyway.”
David walked over, pulling the rolled-up leather ledger out of the back of his jeans and laying it flat on the entryway table. He flipped through a few pages of dense financial records under the warm overhead light. “Marcus is desperate, Sarah. People make mistakes when they’re desperate. He threatened us because he thinks we’re just scared transplants who won’t fight back.”
“What else can we do?” Sarah asked, looking up at her husband with desperate hope in her eyes. “The police in Chicago closed the case years ago. There’s no active investigation. If Marcus goes to the media with fabricated stories, we won’t be able to clear our names before our savings run out and the bank forecloses on this house.”
“We don’t give him the ledger,” David said firmly, his voice leaving no room for argument. “Not yet, at least. We take the ledger to someone who actually has jurisdiction outside of Marcus’s corporate pocket.”
Sarah frowned, confused. “Who? The local police captain golfs with Marcus every weekend. I’ve seen them at the country club.”
“Not the local police,” David replied, tapping his finger against a specific entry in the ledger near the back pages. “Look at this transfer code here, right before Daniel vanished. It didn’t go to a private offshore account. It went to a federal investigative trust fund based out of Springfield. Daniel wasn’t just blackmailing Marcus; he was working as an undercover whistleblower for federal regulators.”

The revelation hung in the air between them, shifting the entire paradigm of their situation. Daniel hadn’t been running away or hiding embezzled funds; he had been gathering evidence to dismantle Marcus Sterling’s entire financial empire from the inside out.
Sarah stared at the entry, tears finally spilling over her lashes, but this time they were tears of profound relief. “My brother wasn’t corrupt. He was trying to stop them.”
