Chapter 11

The security checkpoint at the entrance of the federal building was clinical and efficient. David and Sarah placed their canvas backpack through the X-ray machine, walked through the metal detector without setting off any alarms, and retrieved their belongings under the watchful eyes of armed guards. They rode the elevator up to the fourth floor, stepping out into a quiet, sterile hallway lined with frosted glass doors bearing official government titles.
They found Office 412, labeled ‘Division of Financial Oversight and Corporate Compliance,’ and pushed the door open. A middle-aged woman with sharp glasses and graying hair looked up from a cluttered desk behind the reception counter.
“Good morning. How can I help you today?” she asked professionally, typing a final note on her keyboard.
“My name is Sarah Miller, and this is my husband, David,” Sarah said clearly, stepping forward. “We need to speak with Agent Miller regarding an active whistleblower case initiated fifteen years ago under code name Ledger-Nine.”
The receptionist’s fingers paused over her keyboard. Her professional demeanor instantly sharpened into intense focus. She picked up her desk phone, pressed a single extension button, and spoke in a hushed, urgent tone. Within thirty seconds, a tall man in his late forties wearing a sharp charcoal suit stepped out from a private inner office, his eyes locking onto Sarah’s face with instant recognition.
“Mrs. Miller,” the agent said, stepping forward and extending his hand. “I’m Agent Miller. We’ve been waiting a very long time for someone to bring us the physical evidence from that case. Please, come into my office right now.”

They followed him into a spacious, sunlit office overlooking the downtown skyline. Once the door was securely shut behind them, Sarah unzipped the canvas backpack and placed the aged leather ledger, the silver watch, and the original deposit slips directly onto the polished wooden conference table.
Agent Miller carefully opened the ledger, wearing white cotton inspection gloves. He turned a few pages, examining the watermarks, the handwritten ink entries, and the official transfer codes stamped into the margins. A slow, satisfied smile spread across his face.
