Chapter 15

The summer breeze rustled through the branches of the ancient oak tree in the backyard, casting dancing patterns of sunlight across the newly landscaped flower beds where the strongbox had once lain hidden. Inside the house, the framed photograph of Daniel had been moved to a place of honor on the living room mantel, his bright, intelligent smile radiating warmth and peace over the entire household.
Sarah sat on the front porch swing with a cup of freshly brewed iced tea, gently rocking back and forth as she watched the afternoon clouds drift lazily across the endless blue sky. David joined her a moment later, sitting down beside her and wrapping his arm around her shoulders. They didn’t need to say anything; the quiet companionship between them spoke volumes of everything they had endured and overcome together.
The front door stood slightly ajar, letting a gentle, cooling cross breeze flow freely through the house. The dark days of blackmail, fear, and hiding were firmly in the past, replaced by the bright, unyielding promise of tomorrow. Sarah looked down at her hands—clean, unburdened, and resting easily in her lap. The weight was finally gone from the porch, and for the first time in fifteen years, her family’s story was truly at peace.
