Chapter 9 - The Abduction in the Mist

The cold autumn fog rolled thickly off the river, swallowing the downtown streetlamps in a dense gray blanket that muffled all ambient city noise. Sarah struggled fiercely against the man’s iron grip, twisting her arm and kicking backward with her heels, but her resistance was entirely futile against his superior physical strength. The heavy black sedan door yawned open like a dark maw, waiting to swallow her into the shadows.

“Help!” Sarah screamed, her voice cutting sharply through the foggy air before the man clamped a heavy gloved hand firmly over her mouth, suffocating the sound instantly.

Just as he lifted her off her feet to shove her into the back seat of the vehicle, the sharp wail of a police siren echoed down the intersecting avenue. The flashing red and blue lights of a patrol cruiser cut through the thick fog, painting the wet pavement in vibrant crimson and cobalt hues.

The abductor froze, cursing under his breath as the cruiser turned the corner at high speed, its tires screeching against the asphalt. Letting go of Sarah with a violent shove that sent her sprawling onto the concrete sidewalk, the man dove back into the passenger side of the sedan. The vehicle’s tires spun wildly, spitting gravel before peeling away into the foggy night at breakneck speed, disappearing into the urban labyrinth within seconds.

Sarah lay on the damp pavement, gasping for air as she clutched her bruised arm and watched the tail lights vanish into the mist. The police cruiser slowed down, pulling up alongside the curb with its high beams illuminating her shivering form. The driver’s side door opened, and a uniformed officer stepped out, hand resting cautiously on his holstered firearm.

“Ma'am, are you alright?” the officer asked, jogging over to help her up from the ground. “We received an anonymous 911 call reporting an attempted abduction outside the office tower.”

Sarah leaned heavily against the officer’s arm, her legs shaking uncontrollably as she tried to regain her balance.

“An anonymous call?” Sarah asked, her voice trembling as she wiped a stray tear from her cheek. “Who called the police?”

“Dispatch didn't give a name, just a description of the vehicle and your location,” the officer replied gently, guiding her toward the warm interior of the patrol car. “Do you know who those men were, ma'am?”

Sarah shook her head slowly, though the words of Marcus’s warning echoed loudly inside her mind: The people Julian was working with—they don't care about federal prison sentences.

“They’re connected to my ex-husband,” Sarah whispered, staring out the frosted window of the cruiser as the reality of the danger sinking in clawed at her nerves. “They think I have documents that could expose their entire operation.”

“We need to get you to a safe location immediately,” the officer said, reaching for his radio microphone to call for backup and a secure transport unit. “If these people are tied to organized crime, you and your family are in grave danger.”

At that exact moment, Sarah’s cell phone buzzed violently inside her coat pocket once more. She pulled the device out with trembling fingers, expecting another call from Marcus, but the screen displayed a simple text message from an unknown sender containing a single photograph.

Sarah unlocked the phone and stared at the image with absolute horror. It was a picture of little Lily sleeping peacefully in her own bed, taken through her bedroom window just moments ago, accompanied by a chilling text message.
