Chapter 8 - The Voice Across the Ocean

“Sarah? Are you still there?” the frantic voice crackled through the phone speaker, heavily distorted by static and international routing delays.
Sarah froze on the cold downtown sidewalk, the wind whipping her dark hair across her face as she tried to place the familiar cadence of the caller. It sounded like Marcus, her former business partner who had mysteriously vanished to London three years ago right before their firm collapsed under a mountain of unexplained debts.
“Marcus? How did you get this number?” Sarah demanded sharply, stepping back under the protective overhang of the building entrance to escape the rising autumn gale. “I thought you disappeared off the face of the earth after the audit.”
“I had to run, Sarah, and you know it,” Marcus gasped, his breathing ragged as if he were running up a flight of stairs on the other side of the Atlantic. “Julian wasn't just committing local wire fraud; he was laundering money for international syndicates through those offshore accounts you just seized.”
Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. The legal documents she had spent the last two years compiling had pointed toward corporate embezzlement and domestic financial hiding, but international money laundering was an entirely different magnitude of federal crime that carried multi-decade prison sentences.
“What are you talking about, Marcus?” Sarah asked, her voice dropping to a tense, urgent whisper. “The federal authorities just picked Julian up outside his office ten minutes ago. If he’s tied to international syndicates, they’re going to bury him under the prison.”
“That’s why I’m calling you right now,” Marcus yelled over the roar of London traffic audible in the background. “The people Julian was working with—they don't care about federal prison sentences or courtrooms. They operate outside the law, and if Julian starts talking to federal prosecutors to save his own skin, they’re going to tie up every loose end attached to that fraud ring.”
Sarah gripped her phone so tightly her knuckles turned completely white. A cold wave of dread washed over her, replacing the sweet taste of victory with a terrifying new reality.
“Loose ends?” Sarah repeated slowly, the horrifying implication dawning on her with crystal clarity. “What kind of loose ends, Marcus?”
“Everyone who has access to those financial disclosures,” Marcus replied frantically. “That means you, Clara, and yes, even little Lily.”
Before Sarah could process the warning, a heavy black sedan with tinted windows pulled up aggressively to the curb, cutting off her train of thought. The passenger side door swung open instantly, and a man in a dark suit stepped out onto the wet pavement, blocking her path toward the subway entrance.
“Mrs. Vance?” the man asked in a low, monotone voice that lacked any human warmth whatsoever. “You need to come with us right now if you want to keep your daughter safe.”
Sarah stared at the stranger, her heart pounding against her ribs as she realized the nightmare was far from over.
“I’m not going anywhere with you,” Sarah said, pressing the end call button on her phone and turning quickly to run back toward the lobby doors.
The man moved with terrifying speed, grabbing her arm in a vice-like grip before she could take a single step toward safety.

“Your ex-husband’s partners don't take no for an answer,” the man whispered into her ear as he dragged her toward the waiting sedan.
