Chapter 10 - The Race Against the Clock

The sterile white walls of the federal safe house felt like a cage to Sarah as she paced back and forth across the reinforced concrete floor. Agent Miller, a senior federal prosecutor specializing in international financial crimes, sat behind a metal folding table covered in digital recording equipment and secure communication terminals. He looked up from his tablet with a grim, exhausted expression as Sarah stopped pacing and slammed her hands down onto the tabletop.
“You need to drop the charges against Julian right now,” Sarah demanded, her voice shaking with a desperate maternal panic that defied all rational legal strategy. “If we don't comply with their demands within the hour, they’re going to harm my daughter.”
Agent Miller remained completely calm, folding his hands neatly over the table as he met her frantic gaze with steady, unwavering professionalism.
“Mrs. Vance, if we back down now, the syndicate wins, and your daughter will never truly be safe from these people,” Miller said softly, his voice measured and empathetic yet utterly unyielding. “Once we capitulate to terrorist blackmail, the demands never stop. They will simply move the goalposts until everyone you love is eliminated.”
“You don't understand!” Sarah screamed, tears finally spilling over her eyelids as she thrust her phone forward to display the threatening photograph of sleeping Lily. “That picture was taken ten minutes ago! They have eyes inside our homes, inside our lives! Police protection outside a house isn't going to stop a professional hit squad.”
Miller stood up from the folding table, walking over to place a comforting yet firm hand on her trembling shoulder.
“We are already moving Lily and her grandmother to a secure, undisclosed military installation three states away,” Miller revealed quietly, watching the shock register across Sarah’s tear-stained face. “Our tactical unit intercepted the threat the moment that text message hit your phone. Your daughter is already in transit with armed federal escorts.”
Sarah let out a ragged breath, the crushing weight on her chest lifting just enough for her to draw a full lung of air.
“Are you sure?” she whispered, her voice cracking miserably. “How do you know they weren't intercepted on the way?”
“Because our team executed a decoy extraction protocol thirty minutes ago,” Miller explained, tapping a key on his tablet to display a live GPS tracking feed of an armored transport vehicle moving rapidly along a dark interstate highway. “The men tracking your daughter are currently chasing an empty decoy van down route ninety-five.”
Before Sarah could process the tactical brilliance of the federal maneuver, the heavy metal door of the safe house slammed open. A junior field agent rushed into the room, holding a secure encrypted laptop with a wild look in his eyes.
“Sir, we just intercepted a high-priority transmission from Julian’s prison holding cell,” the junior agent announced breathlessly, handing the laptop directly to Miller. “He’s trying to cut a deal with the syndicate bosses using Clara as leverage.”
Sarah froze, the blood draining completely from her face as she heard the terrifying news.
“Clara?” Sarah whispered in horror. “What does Julian have to do with Clara now? She left him at the altar!”

“Julian doesn't know the wedding was completely ruined,” Miller muttered darkly, staring at the intercepted audio transcript on the screen. “He just gave the syndicate Clara’s private address, believing she still has the original offshore passcodes hidden in her bridal suite.”
