Chapter 12 - The Flash Drive and the Fire

The intruder lunged across the Persian rug with terrifying speed, his hands outstretched to grab Clara before she could throw the silver flash drive toward the open front door. Clara ducked instinctively, sidestepping his momentum just enough to send him crashing heavily against the edge of the mahogany coffee table. The wooden furniture splintered loudly under his weight, sending ceramic decorative bowls crashing onto the floor in a shower of sharp shards.
“You stupid bitch!” the man snarled, picking himself up off the floor with a bruised shoulder and a murderous glint in his eyes.
Clara did not hesitate. She turned and sprinted toward the kitchen, her heels slipping on the polished hardwood floors as she rounded the corner into the pantry. She slammed the heavy wooden pantry door shut behind her, sliding the brass deadbolt into place just as the man’s heavy shoulder slammed violently against the exterior wood panels. The door shuddered under the impact, the frame cracking dangerously near the lock mechanism.
Trapped inside the small pantry with no alternative exit, Clara’s eyes darted frantically around the shelves. There was no back window, no ventilation shaft—only rows of canned goods, wine bottles, and household cleaning supplies. She grabbed a heavy glass bottle of red wine, holding it like a club as she braced herself for the door to give way.
Another violent crash echoed through the pantry as the deadbolt sheared completely through the wood frame, sending the door flying inward. The intruder stepped through the splintered opening, a cold, vicious smile twisting his features as he saw her cornered against the back shelves.
“End of the line, Ms. Sterling,” the man whispered, reaching inside his bespoke suit jacket to pull out a heavy, suppressed pistol that glinted menacingly under the pantry's single overhead bulb.
Clara raised the wine bottle, preparing to swing with all her might, knowing it was a futile gesture against a firearm.
Suddenly, a deafening crash echoed from the front of the house, followed instantly by the blaring wail of federal tactical sirens screaming down the suburban cul-de-sac. Red and blue strobe lights flashed violently through every window of the house, painting the walls in frantic crimson and cobalt waves.
The intruder froze, lowering the firearm for a fraction of a second as he realized the tactical team had arrived far quicker than anticipated.
“Drop the weapon! Federal agents! Drop the weapon now!” a booming voice commanded from the foyer through a high-powered bullhorn.
Instead of surrendering, the man cursed violently, grabbing a stack of dry-cleaning boxes on the pantry floor and tipping a container of chemical solvent over them before flicking his silver lighter. A sudden wall of orange flames erupted instantly, consuming the dry paper and blocking the doorway in a towering inferno of smoke and heat.
“Let’s see how federal agents save you from a burning house,” the man laughed maniacally, retreating backward through the kitchen window into the dark backyard.

Clara screamed as thick, acrid black smoke filled the small pantry, choking her lungs and blinding her eyes as the flames clawed higher toward the wooden ceiling.
