Chapter 8

The dawn broke over the city with a crisp, clear light that painted the skyscrapers in shades of gold and amber. Inside the sprawling penthouse, Mara stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the sunrise while sipping a steaming mug of black coffee. She wore a sharply tailored navy blue suit today—a clear departure from the beige blazer of the previous day, signaling a transition from defensive posture to commanding authority. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional knot, and her expression was a portrait of focused determination. Lily was still fast asleep in her nursery, guarded by a trusted nanny who had been with Mara since the very beginning.

Across town, in a sterile, overpriced hotel room that smelled faintly of old carpet and desperation, Julian woke up to a reality far more brutal than any nightmare. He had spent most of the night scouring his contacts list, desperately calling old college buddies, former business rivals, and distant acquaintances, begging for emergency loans or temporary housing. Every single call had been politely declined or abruptly hung up on. Word of his total financial collapse had spread like wildfire through the city’s gossip networks. Without his money, Julian was nobody; without his status, he was just an ordinary man with an oversized ego and zero practical survival skills.

He stumbled into the cramped bathroom, splashing cold water on his face and staring at his reflection in the speckled mirror. The tailored suit he had worn so proudly in the lobby yesterday now looked wrinkled and tired, much like the man wearing it. The stubble on his jawline made him look desperate, and the dark circles under his eyes spoke of a sleepless night filled with regret and mounting panic. He realized with terrifying clarity that he had thrown away a brilliant, loyal, and unimaginably wealthy wife for a shallow, high-maintenance socialite who had abandoned him the moment his credit cards stopped working.

Julian grabbed his coat and rushed out of the hotel, driven by a desperate urge to confront Mara at their old family home, forgetting that the property had been purchased entirely with her pre-marital trust fund and was already registered under her exclusive name. When his taxi pulled up to the wrought-iron gates of the estate, he found his key card rejected by the digital lock. The security cameras mounted on the brick pillars tracked his every move, their lenses humming quietly as they focused on his flushed, desperate face. He was locked out of his own life, standing on the outside looking in, while inside, the true master of the estate was preparing to reclaim her rightful throne.
