Chapter 6

Inside the now-silent executive suite on the top floor of the tower, the atmosphere was thick with panic and disbelief. Julian paced frantically across the imported Persian rug, his expensive leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the floorboards as he stared at his dead phone screen. His corporate credit cards had been declined moments earlier at the lobby coffee shop, an embarrassing public rejection that sent a cold shiver down his spine. Clara sat stiffly on a velvet sofa, her gold dress pooling around her like liquid metal, her face twisted in an ugly mask of betrayal and disgust. The illusion of untouchable power they had carefully constructed had evaporated in less than five minutes, leaving behind only the raw, ugly truth of their mutual vulnerability.

“Call the bank’s vice president directly, Julian,” Clara demanded, her voice shrill and accusatory as she glared at the man she had spent the last six months manipulating. “Tell them there’s been a clerical error. Tell them your signature is the only one that matters on these accounts!” Julian stopped pacing, turning to her with wild, bloodshot eyes. He wanted to scream at her, to remind her that it was her expensive tastes and constant demands for status symbols that had driven him to accelerate his betrayal of Mara. But he swallowed his rage, knowing that shouting wouldn't reverse the frozen assets or restore the billions of dollars locked behind Mara’s ironclad security protocols.

The harsh reality was finally sinking into Julian’s fractured consciousness. For all his boasting about closing multi-million-dollar deals and driving corporate strategy, he was nothing more than a figurehead, a polished mannequin dressed in a tailored suit to impress shareholders and magazine profiles. Mara had always been the silent genius behind every successful merger, every brilliant algorithm, and every strategic investment. She had allowed him to take the spotlight because she valued peace over vanity, mistaking his growing arrogance for harmless ambition. Now, that foundational mistake had come back to crush him, and he had no one to blame but his own blinding narcissism.

Clara stood up abruptly, her heels clicking angrily against the floor as she walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the avenue. She pointed a manicured finger down at the street below, her voice dripping with venom. “Your ex-wife just took everything, Julian. Everything! My credit cards are locked too. The penthouse lease is tied to your corporate account, which is currently sitting at absolute zero.” Julian flinched as if struck by a physical blow. He walked slowly to the glass, looking down at the bustling city below, searching in vain for the black sedan that had carried Mara away. The empire had vanished, and all that remained was a ruined man and a bitterly disappointed gold-digger standing in an empty room.
