Chapter 2

Moving with deliberate, unhurried grace, Mara lowered herself to one knee on the unforgiving marble floor. She balanced Lily securely against her right side, her left hand sweeping across the pristine surface to gather the scattered hundred-dollar bills that Julian had tossed aside in his childish fit of arrogance. Each movement was precise, devoid of anger or panic, communicating a terrifying level of self-control that visibly unsettled the onlookers near the security desk. Clara shifted uncomfortably in her gold heels, the rhythmic clicking of her shoes against the stone breaking the tense silence of the lobby. She clearly expected Mara to weep, to beg, or to throw the money back in Julian’s face in a dramatic public spectacle.

Julian crossed his arms, his chest puffing out as he watched Mara pick up the currency. He misread her composure entirely, interpreting her calm demeanor as submission rather than the gathering of a storm. A smug smirk crept back onto his lips, and he muttered something to Clara about suburban housewives having no survival instincts outside of a controlled budget. He believed he had won total victory, securing his freedom, his wealth, and his new life with Clara while reducing his wife to a pathetic scavenger picking up crumbs from the floor. He had forgotten, or perhaps he had never truly understood, who had written the algorithms that generated those very bills in the first place.

As Mara scooped the final stack of cash into her palm, her fingers brushed against the cool leather of her black handbag resting beside her knee. She slid the money inside with practiced efficiency, her eyes remaining fixed on the interior lining. Deep within the bag rested an old, heavy black brick phone—a secure, encrypted satellite device completely disconnected from public networks, untouched by the corporate surveillance Julian thought he monitored. It was a relic from the early days of their marriage, back when they operated out of a cramped garage and built their fortune through sheer grit and sleepless nights, long before Julian traded his integrity for bespoke suits and gold-digger mistresses.

Lifting her head, Mara locked eyes with Julian, her expression so chillingly neutral that the smug smile faltered on his face. She pulled the heavy brick phone from the depths of her handbag, its matte black surface absorbing the harsh lobby lights. The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. The security guards near the entrance stopped their murmurs, sensing the sudden drop in temperature. Julian uncrossed his arms, a sudden, cold prickle of dread washing over his skin as he stared at the vintage device in her hand. He knew what that phone represented; it was the master key to the entire financial architecture of their holding company, a direct line to the private banking syndicate that answered to no board of directors save one.
