Chapter 8 - The Arrival of the Law

The rising wail of police sirens cut sharply through the humid night air, bouncing off the suburban rooftops and rapidly growing louder with every passing second. Red and blue emergency lights began to flash against the neighboring fences, painting the backyard in a frantic, rhythmic pulse. The burly delivery driver didn't even attempt to reach his van; he scrambled awkwardly over the wooden fence into the adjacent yard with a frantic crash of bushes.
Mark stood paralyzed in the middle of the damp lawn, his hands hovering uselessly near his sides as the reality of his situation finally settled in. His elaborate web of lies, manipulation, and petty theft had collapsed entirely in less than fifteen minutes, reduced to ash just like Helen’s designer handbag in the grill.
"You called the police?" Mark asked, his voice cracking with genuine panic as he looked at Helen with wide, unbelieving eyes. "You called the cops on your own son-in-law? Do you have any idea what this is going to do to Clara’s reputation in this neighborhood?"
"My daughter’s reputation will survive just fine once the trash is taken out," Helen replied coldly, not flinching an inch as two uniformed police officers rounded the corner of the house, flashlights cutting through the gloom.
"Freeze! Police! Nobody move!" shouted the lead officer, his hand resting securely on his holster as he scanned the chaotic scene—the ruined cake, the smoking barbecue, the mud-stained man, and the two women standing firm in the center of it all.
Clara stood like a statue, the phone still clutched in her hand, her beige blouse stained with frosting and dirt. She didn't cry. The shock had burned away all her tears, leaving behind a cold, sharp clarity that terrified even her.
"Officer, he's right there," Clara said, her voice disturbingly steady as she pointed directly at Mark. "He’s been systematically burglarizing our home for six months, and he has a storage unit full of stolen family heirlooms."
"Ma'am, step back, let us handle this," the officer instructed, gesturing for his partner to move in.
Mark didn't fight back. As the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, he cast one final, venomous look toward Helen.
"You think you won?" Mark snarled as the officers pulled him backward toward the lit walkway. "You gave up everything today, Helen. And Clara will never forgive you for making a scene like this."

As the police escort led him away into the flashing red lights, Clara slowly dropped her arm, staring down at the open chat logs on the phone screen. A new message had just popped up from an unsaved number.
