Chapter 1 - The First Flame

The backyard smelled of scorched butter and expensive leather. A thick, acrid cloud drifted lazily into the late afternoon air from the belly of the Weber grill, carrying the unmistakable scent of burning calfskin and high-end hardware. Helen stood motionless, her sixty-year-old shoulders rigid beneath a soft white cardigan, staring blankly into the leaping red and orange flames. Resting safely on her arm just moments ago, her cherished brown leather designer handbag—the one adorned with the gleaming golden double-G logo that her late husband had purchased for their thirtieth wedding anniversary—was now actively melting into a twisted, blackened mass among the glowing charcoal briquettes.
Clara rushed forward, her beige blouse catching the breeze, her face flushed with sudden, unadulterated panic. She threw her hands out toward the fire before stopping short of the intense heat, her voice cracking in absolute disbelief.
"Do you know how much that cost?" Clara shouted, her eyes darting wildly from the ruined accessory to her mother’s deadpan expression.
"I've been listening to myself for a year," Helen replied, her voice remarkably even, cutting cleanly through the chaotic murmurs of the stunned guests standing near the patio table.
"Mother, have you completely lost your mind?" Clara demanded, taking a sharp step closer, breathing heavily. "That was limited edition! You guarded that bag with your life!"
"The purse was never the problem," Helen said, turning her head slowly to lock eyes with her daughter, her gaze piercing and devoid of any traditional maternal warmth.
"Then what on earth is wrong with you?" Clara pressed, her tone sharpening into an aggressive, defensive edge as Mark finally ambled out from the background, his dark polo shirt wrinkled.
