Chapter 5 - The Dash to the Gate

Mark’s hesitation lasted only a fraction of a second before he made his decision. Instead of handing over the phone, he shoved Clara hard out of his way, sending her stumbling backward against the patio table where the ruined birthday cake sat in a pathetic heap of white frosting and crushed sponge. With a burst of desperate energy, he turned and sprinted blindly across the manicured lawn toward the wooden gate leading to the alleyway.
"Stop him!" Helen yelled, her sixty-year-old legs moving with surprising swiftness as she grabbed a garden hose nozzle off the wall mount and sprayed a powerful stream of cold water directly into Mark’s path, slicking the grass and turning the ground to mud.
Mark’s athletic shoes hit the wet turf at full speed, lost all traction, and sent him crashing heavily onto his back with a loud, breath-expelling grunt. The phone flew out of his hand, tumbling across the grass and coming to rest against the base of a potted hydrangea bush.
Clara recovered her balance, wiped frosting from her beige blouse with a furious swipe, and marched across the damp lawn straight toward the fallen device. Her breath came in ragged, furious gasps as she bent down, snatched the phone from the dirt, and straightened up just as Mark groaned and rolled over in the mud.
"Don't look at it, Clara, it's just spam!" Mark yelled, scrambling to his knees, his dark polo shirt ruined by wet earth and green stains.
Clara ignored him entirely. Her thumb swiped across the screen, bypassing the lock screen effortlessly because Mark had used her own birthday as the passcode. The most recent text message sat bold and clear at the very top of the notification tray, sent less than two minutes ago from a contact named 'Storage Unit 4B'.
"The truck is loaded," the message read. "Bring the rest of the old lady's coin collection or the deal is off."
Clara stared at the glowing words, the blood draining completely from her face. She slowly raised her eyes from the screen to look down at her husband, who was now kneeling in the mud like a beaten dog.
"A coin collection?" Clara whispered, her voice dead and hollow. "Mom’s father’s gold sovereigns? You told me those were stolen during a break-in six months ago."
May you like
Mark swallowed hard, his eyes shifting nervously as he realized there was no escape left.
