Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Hallway

The silence that followed Helen’s declaration was heavy enough to suffocate the chirping crickets in the bordering hedges. Clara’s mouth remained slightly open, a silent retort dying on her lips as Mark stepped fully into the circle of light cast by the burning grill. He shoved his hands deep into the pockets of his jeans, a practiced, arrogant smirk playing faintly at the corners of his mouth.

"Helen, honey, I think the heat is getting to you," Mark said, his voice dripping with a patronizing warmth that made Clara’s skin crawl despite the blazing fire behind them. "It's just a birthday party. A clumsy kid dropped a slice of cake. We can laugh this off."

"Don't you dare call me honey," Helen snapped, her voice dropping an octave, carrying a lethal authority that caused Mark’s smirk to falter for a fraction of a second. "And don't you dare act like you don't know exactly what I am talking about."

Clara glanced back and forth between her mother and her husband, a knot of dread tightening rapidly in her stomach. She had invited Mark to move into the guest suite nearly a year ago, believing he was a grieving widower trying to rebuild his life after a tragic loss. But lately, small things had felt entirely wrong.

"Mom, stop it," Clara hissed, grabbing Helen’s forearm. "Mark has been nothing but a saint since he lost his wife. Why are you attacking him on your sixtieth birthday?"

"A saint?" Helen let out a dry, humorless chuckle that sounded like dry leaves scraping across concrete. "Ask him where he was on the third Tuesday of last month when my antique sapphire ring vanished from my dresser."

Mark’s face drained of color instantly, his eyes darting toward the back gate.
