Chapter 9 - The Missing Signature

Detective Vance stepped past Julian, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply against the hardwood floor as he walked toward the living room table. He picked up the printed property deed that Julian had handed him just moments earlier, holding it up to the natural light streaming through the front window.

"You filed this electronic deed under an expedited emergency clause," Detective Vance said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing tone. "Which requires a mandatory video confirmation of mental competency from a licensed medical professional if the previous owner is over seventy years old. Where is the attending physician's digital seal on this document, Mr. Vance?"

Julian swallowed hard, taking an involuntary half-step backward. His composure was rapidly unraveling under the weight of actual law enforcement scrutiny. "The... the doctor was delayed due to an emergency at the hospital. We were going to submit the medical affidavit this afternoon."

"An affidavit cannot be submitted after a property transfer has already been executed and registered with the county clerk," Detective Vance stated coldly, flipping the digital tablet over to reveal a warning red stamp across the screen. "That makes this entire transaction an illegal seizure. And coupled with your aunt’s on-record statement regarding coercion, we have probable cause for criminal fraud."

Clara’s face turned the color of chalk. She grabbed Julian’s arm, her voice rising in sheer panic. "Julian, you told me the legal loophole was airtight! You said the county clerk was in our pocket!"

"Shut your mouth, Clara!" Julian hissed, violently shaking her hand off his arm. He turned back toward the detective with a forced, trembling smile. "Detective, let’s not be hasty. This is a private family dispute. We can settle this outside of court, write up a new agreement, no need to involve the precinct."

"Family dispute?" Naaly stepped forward, her eyes blazing with righteous fury as she pulled her smartphone out of her pocket and unlocked it. "There is no family dispute here, Detective. This is a premeditated corporate heist. And I have the exact paper trail that proves Julian didn't just forge a property deed—he embezzled three hundred thousand dollars from our family printing press to do it."

Naaly tapped her screen twice, casting the glowing financial spreadsheet directly onto the smart-home television screen mounted on the living room wall. Bright, undeniable columns of numbers, wire transfers, and shell company names lit up the room in stark, damning detail.

Julian lunged toward the television console, desperately trying to yank the power cord out of the wall, but Detective Vance was faster. The detective grabbed Julian’s arm with a iron grip, twisting it behind his back and slamming him against the wall with a resounding thud.

"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, fraud, and elder coercion," Detective Vance announced, snapping a pair of cold steel handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists.

As Julian was hauled toward the front door, he twisted his head around, glaring at Naaly with pure venom in his eyes. "You think you've won, you little fraud? Check the basement archive room before you celebrate. You don't even know what your real father left down there."
