Chapter 3 - The Debt of Shadows

Naaly’s hands shook so violently that she nearly dropped her smartphone onto the hard flagstones. Her thumb hovered over the glowing screen, dread pooling heavy and cold in her stomach. Julian’s words echoed in her ears, hinting at a financial trap she had never known existed. She forced her eyes back down to the digital pages of the Property Deed, scrolling frantically past the notarized signatures until she hit the glowing blue hyperlink labeled Addendum B: Encumbrances and Liabilities.

"What are you talking about, Julian?" Naaly demanded, lifting her gaze to meet his cold, unblinking stare. "The mortgage was paid off three years ago. Dad made the final payment before he passed away. I balanced the ledger myself."

Julian let out a dry, humorless chuckle that sounded like stones scraping together. "Oh, sweet, naive Naaly. Dad paid off the original bank mortgage, sure. But did he ever tell you about the private business loans he took out to keep his failing printing press afloat? No? Of course not. He was too proud to let his precious daughter know he was drowning."

Clara stepped out onto the patio beside Julian, leaning against the doorframe with an air of practiced superiority. "We paid off fifty thousand dollars in undisclosed back-taxes and private debt collectors just to keep the county from seizing this property yesterday morning, Naaly. Legally, the house belongs to whoever settles the debt. And that happens to be us."

Naaly stepped back, the dark gray duffel bag slipping from her shoulder and hitting the concrete with a heavy thud. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Her father had always been a quiet, hardworking man, but the thought of him hiding such massive financial ruin felt like a betrayal from beyond the grave. Yet, looking at Julian’s unshakable confidence, a cold horror settled over her. They hadn't just stolen her home through trickery; they had used her father’s secret vulnerabilities as a weapon.

"You knew," Naaly said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as she stared directly at her cousin. "You knew about the debts before he died, didn't you? You waited until I was out of town to ambush Mom."

Julian didn't answer immediately. He slowly reached into his cardigan pocket, pulling out a folded piece of yellowed paper and holding it up like a trophy. "I know a lot of things about this family, Naaly. More than you could ever imagine. And speaking of things your father kept hidden..." Julian unfolded the paper slightly, revealing a faded signature at the bottom. "...there's another document inside the house that completely changes who gets the family estate."
