Chapter 4 - The Yellowed Confession

The afternoon breeze suddenly felt freezing, cutting right through Naaly’s beige hoodie as she stared at the faded piece of yellowed paper in Julian’s hand. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The casual way Julian held the document suggested it possessed immense power, a secret weapon he had saved specifically for this confrontation.

"What is that?" Naaly asked, her voice strained, refusing to let her voice crack further. "What else could possibly exist outside of the official deed?"

"Oh, just a little addendum written in your father’s own handwriting," Julian smirked, turning the paper slightly so the light hit the faded ink. "Dated just three days before his stroke. A handwritten codicil stating that if the property ever faced foreclosure or unmanageable debt, absolute control reverts to the nearest male bloodline to protect the family name. That means me, Naaly. Not you."

"That's impossible," Naaly shot back, stepping forward with her fists clenched tightly at her sides. "Dad believed in equal rights. He raised me to manage this estate. He would never write something so archaic and sexist!"

"Believe what you want," Clara chimed in from the doorway, her lips curling into a smug smile. "The handwriting expert already authenticated it. It’s registered with our family lawyer in the city. You’re fighting a losing battle, Naaly. You’re just a librarian with a backpack and a dream. We hold all the cards now."

Inside the house, Naaly’s mother let out a muffled sob, pressing both hands over her face as she turned away from the sliding glass doors. The sound tore at Naaly’s heart, overriding her anger with a surge of protective fury. She couldn't abandon her mother to these vultures. Whatever financial web Julian and Clara had spun, there had to be a flaw, a legal loophole, or a witness who could prove coercion.

"I'm not leaving," Naaly declared, her voice steadying as she bent down to scoop up her duffel bag. "That’s my mother in there, and this is my home. You can wave your fake deeds and yellowed paper all you want, but I am walking through that door."

As Naaly took a decisive step forward, blocking Julian’s path into the house, Clara’s expression shifted from smug satisfaction to sudden alarm. Clara reached out, grabbing Julian’s sleeve and whispering something urgent into his ear. Julian’s eyes widened slightly before hardening back into a mask of cold authority.

"Go ahead and walk inside, Naaly," Julian said softly, stepping aside with an unnerving, polite gesture. "See for yourself what your mother has been hiding in the master bedroom safe."
