Chapter 10 - Secrets Beneath the Floorboards

The front door clicked shut as Detective Vance led a handcuffed Julian out to the county cruiser, while Clara was escorted out shortly afterward to answer a barrage of mandatory police questioning. The heavy silence that settled over the house felt entirely different now—not suffocating with deceit, but heavy with the weight of unrevealed truths.

Naaly stood in the center of the living room, her chest heaving as she tried to process the chaotic events of the last hour. Her mother slumped back onto the sofa, weeping softly into a floral handkerchief, exhausted from the emotional turmoil.

"Mom," Naaly said gently, kneeling beside the older woman and taking her frail, trembling hands. "It's over. Julian is gone. But before the police come back to finish the formal site inspection, I need to know what Julian meant. What is in the basement archive room?"

Her mother stopped crying for a moment, her clouded eyes focusing on Naaly with a sudden, haunting intensity. The older woman squeezed Naaly’s fingers with surprising strength. "Your father... he wasn't just a printer, Naaly. Before he passed away, he discovered that Julian’s father was systematically stealing from the family business. That’s why Julian targeted this house. He wasn't just after the property... he was looking for the missing ledger."

Naaly’s breath caught. "The ledger? The one that proves where the stolen money went?"

"Yes," her mother whispered, nodding slowly. "It’s hidden behind the false brick wall in the basement archive room. The combination is your birthday. Go down there before the county officers start tearing the foundation apart."

Naaly didn't hesitate. She grabbed her dark gray duffel bag, slinging it over her shoulder, and hurried toward the back hallway leading to the basement stairs. The wooden steps groaned under her white sneakers as she descended into the cool, dim subterranean space. The air smelled of damp earth, aged paper, and old iron.

She flicked on the overhead fluorescent light, illuminating rows of steel shelving stacked with decades of family records and printing plates. She walked straight to the far back corner, where a reinforced brick wall separated the archive room from the crawlspace beneath the patio.

Kneeling on the concrete floor, Naaly found the small brass combination lock embedded in the mortar. Her fingers entered her birthday digits with practiced precision. With a heavy, metallic thud, a section of the brick wall swung inward on hidden hinges, revealing a dark, recessed compartment.

Reaching inside, Naaly’s fingers brushed against a thick, leather-bound book wrapped in oilcloth. She pulled it out into the light and flipped it open. On the very first page, written in her late father’s meticulous handwriting, was a detailed confession and asset trail that exposed an empire of fraud far larger than Julian ever imagined.

As Naaly stared at the damning pages, a soft footstep echoed behind her on the basement stairs, followed by a quiet, metallic click that froze the blood in her veins.
