CHAPTER 3: THE MIDNIGHT TEST

At 9:00 PM, Mark tucked Lily into bed. He kissed her forehead, lingering to listen to the soft, rhythmic hum of her breathing. "I love you to the moon, baby," he whispered.

"And around the stars, Daddy," she murmured, her voice heavy with fatigue.

Mark slipped quietly down the carpeted stairs. Clara had already retired to the guest wing, the house engulfed in suffocating quiet. Instead of heading to bed, Mark grabbed his coat, slipped the flask into his pocket, and left through the front door without making a sound.

He drove thirty minutes across the city to an all-night private toxicology lab owned by Nathan Hayes, his closest friend from college. Nathan was working late on pharmaceutical trial assays when Mark burst through the glass doors, looking wild-eyed and disheveled.

"Mark? What’s going on? It’s past ten," Nathan said, taking off his safety glasses.

"I need you to run a gas chromatography scan on this liquid right now," Mark breathed, slamming the vial onto the counter. "Don't log it in the system. Just tell me what’s in it."

Nathan frowned at the urgency in his friend's voice. "Is this Lily's medication?"

"Just run it, Nate. Please."

For forty agonizing minutes, the hum of the centrifuge and the rhythmic clicking of the analyzer filled the sterile laboratory. Mark paced back and forth, tearing at his fingernails until they bled. Every memory of the past six months flashed through his mind—Clara always volunteering to prepare Lily's meals, Clara insisting that private nursing was too disruptive, Clara managing the insurance disbursements from his late wife’s multimillion-dollar trust.

When the printer finally spat out the data sheet, Nathan stared at the readouts, his face turning ghostly pale. "Mark... where did you get this?"

"Tell me," Mark commanded, his voice cracking.

"This is an ultra-concentrated ophthalmic neurotoxin derived from an unregistered synthetic alkaloid. In microdoses, it creates optical nerve inflammation that mimics genetic macular dystrophy. In higher doses... it causes permanent cerebral blindness." Nathan looked up, horrified. "Someone is systematically blinding your daughter."
