CHAPTER 15: UNDER THE OAK TREE

One year later.

The ancient oak tree in the suburban park was alive with vibrant green leaves, rustling gently in the warm summer breeze. The afternoon sun cast dappled golden patterns across the wooden bench where a nightmare had once begun.

Lily, now seven years old and completely free of her glasses, sprinted across the open lawn, laughing as she chased a yellow swallowtail butterfly. Her sight was crisp, bright, and full of wonder.

"Lily, don't run too close to the pond!" Leo shouted with a grin, adjusting his baseball cap as he jogged alongside her, guarding her steps with the easy, protective warmth of a devoted older brother.

Mark sat on the bench, watching his two children play in the sunlight. In his hands, he held the legal adoption certificate bearing Leo’s new name: *Leo Vance.* He looked up at the vast blue sky, feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude and peace. The world was full of calculated darkness and hidden cruelty, but it was also full of unexpected miracles—found not in sterile laboratories or wealth, but in the fierce, unbroken empathy of a discarded child who refused to look away.

"Daddy! Look!" Lily called out, running back to the bench with Leo by her side. She held up a bright wild dandelion in her open palm. "Look how bright it is!"

Mark wrapped his arms around both of them, pulling them close under the protective shade of the great oak.

"I see it, baby," Mark smiled, his heart full. "I see everything."
