CHAPTER 11: A FRAGILE LIGHT

By dawn, the suburban street had cleared of police vehicles, leaving behind an eerie stillness. Nathan arrived at the house accompanied by Dr. Sophia Lin, the region’s foremost pediatric neuro-ophthalmologist.

In the living room, Dr. Lin completed a comprehensive, non-invasive scan of Lily’s retinas using specialized diagnostic equipment. Mark sat on the edge of his seat, holding his breath, his hands clenched tightly together.

Dr. Lin removed the diagnostic lenses and turned to Mark with a warm, reassuring smile. "You caught it just in time, Mr. Vance."

A ragged sob escaped Mark’s chest. "She won't be permanently blind?"

"The chemical toxicity caused severe, reversible inflammation of the peripheral myelin sheaths around the optic nerve, but the core fibers have not atrophied," Dr. Lin explained. "We will begin a targeted intravenous chelating therapy today to flush out the remaining alkaloids. Her vision will be blurry for a few weeks, but with proper therapy, I expect a 90 to 95 percent recovery within six months."

Lily, sitting on the sofa in her pajamas, sensed her father’s emotion. She reached her small arms out into the air until her fingers brushed his damp cheek. "Daddy? Why are you crying? Did the clouds go away?"

May you like

Mark pulled his daughter into an embrace so tight he felt her rapid heartbeat against his chest. "Yes, my love," he wept openly, kissing her hair. "The clouds are gone. The sun is coming back."
