Chapter 5

The mention of the basement vault hung heavily in the air, thick with unspoken danger. Elena stared at her mother-in-law, searching for any sign of a cruel trick. Eleanor’s face remained a mask of measured caution, her white hair perfectly coiffed, betraying none of the internal turmoil that must have prompted her to betray Arthur.

“Why are you telling me this?” Elena whispered, taking a cautious step forward. “You poured the water on her, Eleanor. You were right there with them, filming, smiling for the board.”

“Survival in this house requires playing a very long game,” Eleanor replied, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. She glanced over her shoulder to ensure the hallway was empty before stepping closer. “Arthur has been liquidating the family assets behind the board’s back. He’s planning to frame your late husband for embezzlement to justify taking complete control of the trust. Clara isn't just a pawn for discipline; she’s the primary legal beneficiary who can sign away the remaining shares when she turns eighteen.”

Clara clutched the wool blanket tighter, looking between the two adults with wide, frightened eyes. Elena’s mind raced as she pieced the puzzle together. The public humiliation, the rigged custody clauses, the sudden strictness—it wasn't about a broken crystal goblet at all. It was a hostile corporate takeover disguised as family discipline.

“How do I access the vault?” Elena asked urgently, her voice steadying with resolve. “The security down there is biometric. I don't have clearance.”

“Arthur’s private study holds the physical master key,” Eleanor said, sliding a small, cold brass key into Elena’s palm. It felt heavy and sharp against her skin. “He keeps it inside the drawer of his mahogany desk, behind the false panel. But you only have until dawn before the morning guards change shifts. If you are caught, Arthur will have you institutionalized before sunrise.”

Before Elena could respond, a sudden crash echoed from the hallway outside the nursery door—the sound of heavy footsteps and shouting.

Eleanor stiffened, her eyes widening in genuine fear. “He knows.”
