Chapter 14

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers painted the polished gray concrete of the grand foyer in shifting colors. Arthur Vance was escorted out of the estate in handcuffs, his head held down as camera shutters flashed relentlessly from the press pack gathered outside the massive glass doors. The very crowd that had filmed Clara’s humiliation hours earlier was now recording the downfall of the patriarch.
Elena sat on the bottom step of the grand mahogany staircase, holding a sleeping Clara tightly in her lap. The little girl’s face was stained with dried tears, but her breathing was deep and peaceful, wrapped safely in the warm wool blanket. Elena’s gold sequined dress was torn and stained, but she wore it like royal armor.
Eleanor walked over, her green sequined gown shimmering softly, and handed Elena a warm cup of tea on a silver tray. Elena looked up, taking the cup with a quiet nod of gratitude.
“Will you be all right here alone after all this?” Elena asked softly, blowing gently across the surface of the tea.
“I won't be alone, and I won't be staying,” Eleanor replied, looking around the cavernous, hollow estate with a sense of profound relief. “The board has appointed me interim chairwoman long enough to dissolve the trusts and distribute the assets equitably. This house... this mausoleum of greed is going to be turned into a charitable foundation for children’s education.”
Elena offered a faint, genuine smile, the first real expression of peace she had shown since stepping foot in the mansion. “Thank you, Eleanor. For everything.”
“I only finally did what was right,” Eleanor said, placing a gentle, trembling hand on Clara’s sleeping head. “You protected her when the whole world tried to break her. That makes you the strongest Vance of us all.”
Suddenly, the front doors opened wider, and a tall man in a tailored dark suit rushed into the foyer. He scanned the room frantically before his eyes locked onto Elena and Clara.
Elena dropped her tea cup, the ceramic shattering against the floor as she gasped, her hands flying to her mouth in absolute disbelief.
“David?” Elena choked out, tears of shock filling her eyes.
The man dropped to his knees before them, tears streaming down his face as he reached out to pull Elena and Clara into his arms.

“I’m sorry I was late, my loves,” David whispered, kissing Clara’s forehead. “I’m finally home.”
