Chapter 2

Arthur Vance descended the sweeping mahogany staircase with measured, deliberate steps. The diamond-encrusted watch on his wrist glinted under the lights, a symbol of the immense wealth that built this empire of glass and steel. He looked down at Elena and the shivering Clara with eyes as dead and gray as the concrete floor. The onlookers instinctively parted for him, treating him like royalty, though he had just orchestrated a public humiliation of his own granddaughter.

Elena tightened her protective grip around Clara, her breath coming in ragged, angry gasps. The gold sequins of her dress scraped against Clara’s wet white cloth, a stark contrast of luxury and misery.

“Arthur, have you lost your absolute mind?” Elena shouted, her voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings of the foyer. “She is a little girl! What kind of sick monster forces a child to clean a floor for a broken glass?”

Arthur stopped three steps from the bottom, looking down his nose at his daughter-in-law. His expression did not soften by a fraction of a millimeter.

“She broke a family heirloom, Elena,” Arthur replied smoothly, his voice carrying the calm authority of a corporate tyrant. “A seventeenth-century crystal goblet. Actions have consequences in this family. The board needed to see that discipline runs in our bloodline, unyielding and absolute. You coddle her, and it will destroy the Vance legacy.”

“Legacy?” Elena spat out the word like poison. “You care more about glass than about human decency! Look at her! She’s freezing! We are leaving right now, and you can take your entire disgusting legacy and burn it to the ground.”

Elena attempted to lift Clara into her arms, but before she could stand, two burly security guards in black suits stepped out from the shadows, blocking the double glass doors that led to the exit. Their massive frames completely shut off the path to freedom.

“Nobody leaves until the probation terms are signed,” Arthur said, raising the document in his hand. “Elena, you might want to read page four very carefully before you make another move.”

Elena froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked from the guards to Arthur, realizing the nightmare had only just begun.
