Chapter 1

The polished gray concrete floor of the grand ballroom reflected the harsh, unforgiving glare of a dozen smartphone flashlights. Seven-year-old Clara knelt in a puddle of spilled water, her pristine white dress damp and clinging to her trembling frame. She clutched a cheap white cloth in her small, freezing hands, sobbing softly as she tried to dry the stone. Surrounding her stood a tight circle of high-society guests in tailored tuxedos and designer gowns, their faces lit by the blue screens of their devices. They weren’t helping; they were recording. Every tear, every shiver, every humiliated gasp was being broadcast live to millions.

Clara looked up, her vision blurred by tears, as her grandmother, Eleanor Vance, stepped forward. Eleanor’s styled white hair caught the chandelier light, her elegant green sequined gown shimmering like fish scales. In her manicured hands, she held a heavy white bucket filled with water.

Clara choked out a desperate, broken whisper, trembling violently against the cold stone.

“Grandma, why?”

Eleanor’s face remained a mask of aristocratic coldness, showing no pity.

Without a word, Eleanor tipped the bucket. A cascade of ice-cold water crashed over Clara’s head, soaking her completely, plastering her dark hair to her face and ruining her dress. A collective murmur rippled through the onlookers, accompanied by the frantic clicking of camera shutters capturing the cruelty.

Before Clara could catch her breath, a flash of brilliant gold tore through the crowd. Elena Vance, wearing a sparkling gold sequined dress, sprinted forward with a fierce, protective snarl. She dropped to her knees, wrapping her trembling arms tightly around her soaked daughter, pressing Clara’s face into her shoulder to shield her from the cameras. Elena shot up, her eyes blazing with absolute fury, glaring daggers at the surrounding crowd.

Elena’s voice cut through the ambient hum of recording devices like a jagged blade, sharp and uncompromising.

“Stay away from my child!”

The crowd recoiled slightly, though nobody lowered their phones. Murmurs broke out, but Elena didn't care. She pulled Clara into her chest, preparing to stand, when a cold, amplified voice echoed from the staircase above them.

“She hasn't finished her punishment yet, Elena.”
