Chapter 6: The Hidden Beacon

The revelation hung in the air like a suffocating cloud, rendering the flashing amber lights outside the window feel less like a rescue and more like an impending siege. Detective Reynolds straightened up, his professional instincts instantly overriding his personal sympathy for the domestic tragedy unfolding before him. He unclipped the radio from his shoulder strap.

""Vance, call tech-recovery back inside,"" Reynolds instructed sharply into the radio mic. ""And tell them to bring the portable frequency scanner. We're looking for a localized transmission device.""

Mark stared blankly at the floor, the pieces of his compartmentalized life crashing together in a catastrophic collapse. The late nights at the office, the endless travel, the sudden promotions, and the subtle perks that had always seemed like standard corporate bonuses suddenly took on a sinister, transactional hue. He had traded his time and his ethics for a suburban lifestyle, unaware that the price was being extracted directly from the genetic code of his unborn child.

Clara winced, pressing a hand against her lower back as a wave of stress-induced pain rippled through her body. Maya watched her with immediate concern, straining against the steel cuffs. ""She needs to sit down properly,"" Maya urged the officers. ""The adrenaline crash is going to trigger premature contractions. You need to take those cuffs off me so I can help her.""

Officer Vance looked at Detective Reynolds for authorization. Reynolds hesitated for a fraction of a second before nodding. ""Take them off. But keep her right here on the sofa. Nobody leaves this room.""

With a metallic click, the cuffs released Maya’s wrists. She rubbed her sore skin briefly before immediately moving to Clara’s side, kneeling gently on the rug. Maya reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, foil-wrapped packet of herbal lozenges, pressing one into Clara’s trembling hand. ""Breathe, Clara. Slow and deep. Just like we practiced at the clinic.""

Mark watched the two women interact with a strange mixture of jealousy and gratitude. The woman he had tackled to the floor just twenty minutes ago was now the only person in the room providing actual comfort to his wife. He felt utterly helpless, a stranger in his own home, stripped of his authority by a conspiracy he had inadvertently served.

""The nursery,"" Mark said suddenly, his voice hollow. He looked toward the hallway leading to the back of the house. ""You said there was a transmitter in the nursery baseboard.""

Maya nodded without looking up from Clara. ""Second floor, left corner, right behind the rocking chair you bought last month. It’s transmitting real-time biometric data straight to a server farm in Seattle. That’s how they knew Clara missed her appointment on Tuesday. That’s why I had to get inside before their security detail realized she was pulling out of the trial.""
