Chapter 4: Unraveling the Past

The silence that followed Detective Reynolds' command was heavy and absolute, broken only by the rhythmic clicking of a distant radiator. Mark remained standing beside the sofa, his body rigid, his eyes locked onto Clara as if seeing her for the very first time. The trust that had formed the foundation of their marriage was suddenly hanging by a thread, fraying under the harsh light of police lamps and unconfessed truths.
Maya shifted slightly against the wooden chair where she sat handcuffed, wincing as the cold steel bit into her wrists. ""I didn't break in to hurt her,"" Maya began, her voice steady despite the tension in the room. ""I broke in because Clara stopped answering my calls three days ago. And when someone who knows the truth suddenly goes silent while living under the same roof as Mark, you don't just walk away.""
""What truth?"" Mark demanded, his voice rising, breaking through his earlier restraint. He stepped away from the sofa, turning to face Maya directly. ""Stop talking in circles. Who are you? Clara never mentioned any friend named Maya.""
""Because I'm not just a friend,"" Maya replied quietly. She lifted her bound hands slightly, a gesture of helpless honesty. ""I’m the lead genetic counselor at the Pacific Bio-Research Institute downtown. Clara came to my clinic three months ago for routine prenatal screening. But the routine tests flagged an anomaly. A rare genetic marker that doesn't just appear by chance.""
Clara opened her eyes, staring blankly at the coffee table. The beige cardigan seemed too large for her now, swallowing her frame as she shrank inward from the collective gaze of the room. ""I didn't want to tell you, Mark,"" she said, her voice shaking violently. ""Because the moment I saw those results, I knew what it meant. Not just for the baby, but for us. For everything we built.""
Detective Reynolds leaned against the kitchen counter, his arms folded across his chest, observing the unfolding drama with a critical eye. ""And how does a medical consultation turn into a home invasion with a baseball bat, Ms. Lin? Connect those dots for me.""

""Because the anomaly wasn't a natural mutation,"" Maya said, her dark eyes locking onto Mark with an intensity that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. ""It was engineered. Designed in a private lab funded by a pharmaceutical subsidiary. A subsidiary where Mark happens to be the senior vice president of research.""
The living room grew colder. Mark stared at Maya, his mouth parting slightly as the accusation hung in the air like poison. The complex corporate world he inhabited during the day had suddenly crossed the threshold of his home, transforming his unborn child into a biological artifact of corporate experimentation.
