Chapter 10: The Plan

The tactical logistics of escaping a house watched by corporate operatives and compromised local authorities required a level of cold precision that none of them had anticipated possessing. Detective Reynolds paced near the kitchen counter, rubbing his temples as he considered the impossible choice before him.

""If I sign off on an unauthorized transport out of this sector, I'm throwing away thirty years on the force,"" Reynolds muttered, staring down at his polished leather shoes. ""My pension, my badge, my career—gone before the sun comes up.""

""And if you stay here and let the jurisdictional transfer go through at midnight, you won't just lose your badge, Detective—you'll be signing off on the disappearance of three innocent people,"" Maya said, her voice cutting through his hesitation with absolute clarity. She stepped closer to him, her expression earnest. ""Gen-Tech doesn't leave loose ends. Once the data scrub is complete, this entire house will be designated a biohazard zone under emergency quarantine protocols. Nobody comes in, nobody comes out, and the official report reads like a tragic gas leak.""

Clara winced as another wave of Braxton-Hicks contractions rippled through her abdomen, forcing her to double over slightly with a sharp intake of breath. Mark was instantly at her side, supporting her weight and glaring up at Reynolds with desperate urgency. ""Look at her, Detective! We don't have until midnight. If we don't get her to a neutral medical facility soon, the stress alone is going to put her into full labor.""

Reynolds looked at Clara, then at the blinking blue LED light of the transmitter resting in the evidence bag on the coffee table. The human cost of the corporate conspiracy was no longer an abstract legal theory; it was sitting right in front of him in a beige cardigan and blue jeans. With a heavy, resolute sigh, the detective reached down and unclipped a spare set of unmarked car keys from his belt loop, tossing them onto the coffee table.

""My personal unmarked cruiser is parked around the back in the alley, behind the detached garage,"" Reynolds said in a low, gravelly whisper. ""It’s registered under an inactive municipal fleet profile. The black sedan out front won't recognize it until you're already past the county line.""

Mark picked up the keys, his hand closing tightly around the cold metal. ""What about you? What are you going to tell them when they storm the house?""

""I'm going to tell them that an armed suspect ambushed us through the back exit,"" Reynolds said grimly, pulling his service pistol from its holster and checking the magazine. ""And by the time they realize I'm the only one left inside, you'll already be inside the clinic vault.""
