Chapter 12: The Descent into the City

The industrial bypass highway was slick with a light, misty drizzle that caught the harsh glare of overhead sodium-vapor lamps, casting a sickly yellow hue across the windshield of the unmarked sedan. Mark kept his eyes locked firmly on the road ahead, his knuckles white against the steering wheel as he maintained a steady, unremarkable speed among the lumbering freight trucks heading toward the downtown core.
In the back seat, Clara leaned heavily against Maya’s shoulder, her breathing having slowed into a more rhythmic, manageable pattern, though the exhaustion was etched deeply into every line of her face. Maya kept one arm wrapped protectively around Clara’s back, her free hand holding the foil-wrapped package containing the evidence transmitter.
""How much further?"" Mark asked without taking his eyes off the wet asphalt.
""Ten minutes,"" Maya replied calmly, checking the digital clock on the dashboard. ""The Pacific Bio-Research Institute is located in the old financial district. At this hour, the security guards are usually down in the basement cafeteria, and the biometric scanners on the lower research levels require an executive override code—which I happen to have memorized.""
Mark glanced in the rearview mirror, meeting Maya’s steady gaze. The animosity that had defined their first meeting in the living room had entirely evaporated, replaced by a grim, utilitarian trust born of shared desperation. ""And once we get the physical files out of your office safe, what then? Where do we go?""
""We don't go to the police,"" Maya said firmly. ""We go straight to the federal district court magistrate on night duty. Federal judges have emergency injunction powers that bypass local corporate red tape. If we place the physical consent forms and the live tracking transmitter directly onto a federal judge’s desk, the injunction takes effect immediately, freezing Gen-Tech’s research assets before they can scrub the servers.""
Clara shifted slightly, opening her eyes. Her voice was raspy, but the panic had cleared from her tone, replaced by a quiet, fierce resolve. ""And my baby? What happens to the trial parameters once the injunction goes through?""
May you like
""The legal contract becomes null and void,"" Maya answered softly, squeezing Clara’s hand. ""The genetic modification sequence is halted at the chromosomal level through a targeted antagonist infusion. You carry your child to term naturally, Clara. Just like you were supposed to from the beginning.""
A profound silence settled inside the car as the words hung in the air. For the first time in weeks, the crushing weight on Clara’s chest felt marginally lighter. The corporate machine that had sought to claim her unborn child as corporate property was about to collide with the unyielding wall of federal law.
