Chapter 3: The DNA Verification

At 11:30 PM, the private medical wing of Mount Sinai Hospital was placed under strict executive lockdown.

Dr. Jonathan Vance, a trusted family physician and Chief of Genetics, administered an expedited PCR-based maternal lineage DNA test using blood samples from both Margaret and Ellie.

While waiting for the thermal cyclers to complete the analysis, Ellie sat on the edge of the leather exam chair, holding a warm cup of herbal tea with both hands. She was wearing clean cotton scrubs provided by the nursing staff, her posture still cautious and guarded.

Margaret sat beside her, never letting go of Ellie’s left hand.

""I grew up in the foster system in upstate New York,"" Ellie whispered, looking down at her rough, callused fingers. ""The agency told me my mother abandoned me in a wicker basket outside a fire station in Syracuse. I spent ten years in group homes, scrubbing kitchens to pay for my community college textbooks.""

Margaret’s chest ached with unbearable grief. ""You were not abandoned, Ellie. You were stolen from your crib while I was recovering from pneumonia. I spent twenty million dollars, hired federal task forces, and searched every adoption registry in North America. They told me you were dead.""

The double doors swung open.

Dr. Jonathan Vance entered the room, holding a printed clinical report. His hands were steady, his eyes shining with emotion.

""Margaret,"" Jonathan said, placing the document on the table. ""The genetic locus matching is absolute. Twenty-four out of twenty-four chromosomal markers are identical. Probability of maternity is 99.999%.""

He looked at Ellie with a warm, reverent smile. ""Welcome home, Evelyn Vance.""

Margaret pulled her daughter into a fierce, weeping embrace, burying her face into Ellie’s dark hair, letting twenty years of accumulated agony dissolve into the clean hospital light.
