Chapter 1: The Torn Silk and the Moon

The grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel on Manhattan’s Upper East Side was bathed in the warm, blinding glow of forty crystal chandeliers. Five hundred guests in tailored tuxedos and couture gowns mingled over vintage champagne.
In the center of the marble floor, a violent confrontation erupted.
""Search her right now! She stole my diamond necklace!""
Victoria Sterling, twenty-eight, stood clad in a bespoke off-the-shoulder sky-blue satin evening gown, her eyes flashing with venomous arrogance. She grabbed the collar of twenty-two-year-old banquet maid Ellie, violently tearing the fabric of her black-and-white uniform down the middle of her back to humiliate her before the elite crowd.
Ellie fell to her knees on the cold Carrara marble, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she clutched her apron against her chest in shame. ""I didn't take anything! I swear on my life, I didn't touch it!""
The tearing of the black dress exposed Ellie’s bare back to the room.
Down the center of her spine ran a clean, six-inch vertical surgical scar. And resting just beside her upper right shoulder blade was a distinct, deep reddish crescent-moon birthmark.
A crystal champagne flute slipped from the manicured fingers of Lady Margaret Vance, shattering violently on the marble floor.
Margaret was sixty-eight, the revered matriarch of the Vance legacy, dressed in an immaculate silver gown with cascading diamond drop earrings. Her breath caught in her throat, her face draining of every drop of color.
For twenty years, Margaret had searched every corner of the globe for her daughter, Evelyn, who had been abducted from her nursery crib at three months old. The police reports, the medical files, and Margaret’s own broken heart had one unforgeable detail etched into them: an infant spinal correction surgery and a crescent birthmark inherited from five generations of Vance women.
Margaret stepped forward, her hands trembling violently. She ignored the broken glass, ignored the stares of Manhattan society, and reached out, her fingertips gently tracing the crescent birthmark on Ellie’s skin.
""Ellie..."" Margaret whispered, her voice breaking into a breathless, ragged sob. ""My lost daughter...""
Victoria turned in utter disbelief, her arrogant face twisting into panic. ""What are you saying? She’s a thief! She’s just a catering maid!""
Margaret looked up, her tear-filled eyes turning into blazing, unyielding steel.

She wrapped her arms around Ellie, shielding the weeping girl with her own body. ""Silence, Victoria! This is my daughter.""
