Chapter 15 - The Final Judgment on Maple Street

The silence that fell over the study was heavier than lead. The barrel of the carbine rifle remained locked on Arthur Gable, who shrank back against the doorframe, whimpering in sudden, paralyzing terror.

"Drop your weapon!" David roared, stepping sideways to clear a clean line of fire while keeping his own pistol trained on the lead mercenary. "Step away from the door or we will open fire!"

Agent Miller didn't hesitate. She hit the emergency broadcast button on her federal radio, transmitting an open-channel SOS directly to the regional FBI field office twenty miles away. "All units, Maple Street command. We have an active armed corporate extraction in progress at the Gable residence. Need immediate tactical air support and perimeter lockdown."

The lead mercenary hesitated, his eyes darting between Agent Miller’s broadcasting radio and David’s unwavering firearm. He realized the window for a clean, quiet corporate cover-up had officially closed.

"Fall back!" the mercenary barked sharply to his two subordinates.

Without another word, the three armed men spun around in unison, sprinting down the hallway toward the front door just as the thunderous thrum of federal helicopter blades began to vibrate through the suburban sky overhead.

David didn't pursue them into the street; he kept his position secure, covering the exit while Megan rushed to Arthur Gable, pulling the old man away from the threshold and onto the safety of the study floor.

"You okay, Arthur?" Megan asked, her voice surprisingly gentle despite everything the old man had put them through.

Arthur nodded weakly, tears streaming down his wrinkled cheeks. "They... they were going to silence me. All these years, I thought I was protecting the neighborhood's heritage. I was just protecting their bottom line."
