Chapter 12 - The Ghost in the System

The name echoed off the dark mahogany walls of Arthur Gable’s study like a physical blow. Officer Megan Carter froze, her hand hovering instinctively near her radio as every eye in the room turned to lock onto her with sudden, suffocating suspicion.

"My badge number?" Megan whispered, her voice shaking with disbelief. "That’s impossible. I’ve been out in the field all morning."

"The system logs don't lie, Carter," David said, stepping away from her instinctively, his hand drifting dangerously close to his service weapon. "The override was executed from a terminal inside the precinct at 8:14 AM using your personal security credentials."

Marcus stared at Megan, his eyes narrowing with a bitter, renewed fury. "So this was all a setup from the very beginning. You weren't just here to harass me on my lawn—you were distracting me while your inside partner wiped the county servers downtown."

"Marcus, no!" Megan pleaded, holding her hands up defensively. "Look at me! I spent the last hour helping you uncover Arthur’s files! Why would I help him and then turn around and help you?"

"To control the narrative," Agent Miller interrupted, her voice turning icy and clinical as she stepped between Megan and the door. She unclipped her own service weapon, keeping it pointed safely toward the floor but ready. "Classic double-agent play. Secure the physical evidence with the local cops while the digital evidence is scrubbed clean from headquarters."

Arthur Gable let out a raspy, triumphant chuckle from the doorway, his terror momentarily forgotten as he watched the federal agent turn on the local officer. "She’s smarter than you think. You thought you were saving the neighborhood, Carter, but you played your part right to the end."

"Shut up, Arthur!" Megan roared, lunging toward the old man, but David stepped into her path, shoving her backward with a firm, rigid arm.

"Stay back, Megan," David commanded, his voice shaking with a mixture of betrayal and profound sorrow. "Don't move another inch."

Megan looked at David, the man she had partnered with for four years, the man she trusted with her life on the streets every single day. His face was a mask of cold, professional duty, completely devoid of warmth or hesitation.

"David, you know me," Megan pleaded, her voice cracking with desperation. "You know I didn't touch that terminal this morning. I was right here with you when we got the first call!"

"People have access to remote terminals, Carter," Agent Miller said, pulling out her handcuffs with her free hand. "And right now, you are the prime suspect in a federal conspiracy investigation."

Before Agent Miller could take another step forward, the front window of the study suddenly shattered inward in a shower of jagged glass and splintered wood. A heavy ceramic brick wrapped in a threatening note landed squarely on the oak drafting table, scattering the yellowed ledgers across the floor.
