Chapter 14 - The Breach at the Front Door

The heavy oak door bounced off the interior wall with a deafening bang, splintering the brass doorstop. Standing in the entryway was a tall, imposing man in a dark grey tactical vest, holding a suppressed carbine rifle pointed firmly at the floor. Behind him stood two other individuals in identical unmarked black tactical gear, their faces hidden behind dark tinted visors.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!" the lead tactical officer shouted, his voice distorted slightly by a heavy tactical communications mask.
David and Agent Miller instantly drew their firearms, spinning around to face the hallway. "Stand down! We are federal and local law enforcement!" David yelled, flashing his badge toward the hallway light.
The lead tactical officer didn't lower his rifle. Instead, his eyes darted past David to Agent Miller, and then down to the oak drafting table covered in stolen property and federal documents.
"Order 14-B," the tactical officer barked, his voice cold and robotic. "All unauthorized personnel are to secure the premises and hand over all historical ledgers to the municipal asset recovery team immediately."
Agent Miller’s face hardened into a mask of pure fury. "There is no Order 14-B! That’s an illegal asset seizure code, and you know it! Who sent you? City Hall or the development corporation?"
"We are acting under direct orders from the Department of Municipal Infrastructure," the officer replied, taking a deliberate step into the study, his rifle raising another two inches. "Hand over the ledgers, or we will use authorized force to clear the room."
Marcus didn't hesitate. Instead of retreating, he stepped directly in front of the oak drafting table, placing his body between the tactical officers and the historical documents his family had fought for sixty years to reclaim.
"You want these papers?" Marcus roared, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "You’ll have to shoot through an American citizen standing on his own stolen land to get them!"
Megan’s heart pounded against her ribs. She looked at the tactical officers, then at the open window, and finally at David, who was standing shoulder-to-shoulder with her, his weapon raised and ready for a firefight that could end in absolute disaster.
"They aren't municipal security," Megan whispered urgently to Agent Miller. "Look at their patch insignia—it's scraped off their vests. They're private corporate mercenaries hired by Arthur's development syndicate."
Arthur Gable let out a strangled cry from the doorway, realizing the monsters he had invited into the neighborhood had finally come to collect their debt. "Don't shoot! They'll kill us all to cover up the title fraud!"
The lead tactical officer glared at Arthur, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger of his carbine rifle. "Shut your mouth, old man. You’ve outlived your usefulness."

The barrel of the rifle shifted slowly away from Agent Miller and pointed directly at Arthur’s chest.
