Chapter 9 - Whispers in the Dark

The sprawling gardens of the Vance estate were a labyrinth of clipped boxwood hedges, weeping willows, and ancient stone fountains that dripped endlessly in the misty night air. Julian moved as quickly and silently as possible along the gravel paths, his eyes fixed on the towering French doors of the eastern conservatory. According to the schematics Elena had uploaded to his phone before he left the car, the conservatory provided the only direct access to the subterranean service corridors leading beneath the main manor house to the family vault.
The digital timer on his phone screen blinked relentlessly: 00:22... 00:21... 00:20.
Every shadow cast by the weeping willows looked like a security guard waiting to strike. Julian ducked low as a distant floodlight swept across the upper terrace, missing his position by mere yards. His lungs burned with the cold autumn air, but he forced his legs to move faster, navigating the familiar grounds where he had once walked as an honored, arrogant guest. How ironic, he thought bitterly, that he was now forced to sneak into his former home like a common burglar, armed only with the very ring his fiancée had used to brand him a failure.
He reached the heavy wooden doors of the conservatory, throwing his weight against the iron latch. To his immense relief, the door yielded with a soft click, sliding open into the warm, humid interior filled with the scent of wet earth and exotic orchids.
00:05... 00:04... 00:03...
Julian tumbled inside, slamming the heavy wooden door shut just as the exterior security grid hissed back to life with a sharp, electronic hum that vibrated through the floorboards. He collapsed against the inside of the door, gasping for breath in the dark, damp sanctuary of the greenhouse. He wiped the cold sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand and pulled out his phone to check the encrypted messaging app.
A single new message from Elena glowed on the screen: Phase one complete. You are inside the perimeter. Proceed down the spiral staircase behind the citrus trees to sublevel two. The vault biometric scanner requires the ring to be held against the glass lens.
Julian pocketed the phone, pulled his coat tighter around his shivering frame, and began scanning the rows of towering citrus trees in the dim moonlight filtering through the glass ceiling. Sure enough, tucked discreetly behind a massive lemon tree was a narrow, cast-iron spiral staircase descending vertically into absolute blackness.
As he approached the top of the stairs, a sudden sound echoed through the conservatory—the soft, deliberate click of a high-heeled shoe hitting the stone floor at the opposite end of the greenhouse.
Julian froze. He held his breath, pressing his back flat against the glass wall behind a thick cluster of fern fronds.

“I know you’re here, Julian,” a voice rang out through the dark—cool, calm, and utterly unmistakable. It was Victoria.
