Chapter 7 - The Emerald Proposition

The woman in the emerald-green coat turned on her heel without a word, gesturing sharply for Julian to follow her toward the secluded, dimly lit corridor leading to the lower-level subway exits. Julian hesitated for a fraction of a second—his instincts screaming that he was walking into another trap—but the biting cold outside and the utter emptiness of his bank accounts left him no rational alternative. He grabbed the strap of his wet coat and hurried after her, his shoes clicking rhythmically against the marble floor.
She led him into a quiet, shadowed alcove beneath a grand stone staircase where the roar of the city above faded into a muffled hum. She turned around, pulling down the brim of her silk fedora just enough to reveal sharp, aristocratic features and piercing grey eyes that studied Julian like a specimen under a microscope.
“You look considerably less formidable in person than you do in the financial press, Julian,” she remarked, her tone devoid of mockery, stating it merely as a clinical observation.
Julian crossed his arms defensively, trying to salvage whatever dignity he had left. “Spare me the commentary. You asked for the ring, and I’m here. Who are you, and what game are you playing?”
The woman reached into her pocket and pulled out a sleek, black leather cardholder, flipping it open to display an identification badge that Julian couldn't read in the dim light, though the golden seal of an international asset recovery firm was unmistakable.
“My name is Elena Rostova,” she said, her voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial register. “And I represent a consortium of international investors who have spent the last three years watching Victoria Vance monopolize the eastern European mineral markets through ruthless, monopolistic practices.”
Julian narrowed his eyes, a flicker of cynical hope igniting within him. “So you’re enemies with Victoria. That makes us allies of convenience. What’s your angle?”
Elena stepped closer, her grey eyes locking onto his. “My employers don't want to destroy Victoria Vance financially—that’s amateur work. They want her entire empire dismantled from the inside out. And to do that, we need access to the Vance family vault located beneath their ancestral estate in upstate New York.”
Julian let out a dry, humorless laugh, shaking his head. “The vault? Are you insane? That biometric safe requires Victoria’s iris scan, her mother’s voice authorization, and a physical master key that hasn’t left Victoria’s possession since her father died. Not to mention the private security detail that patrols the perimeter twenty-four hours a day.”
Elena reached out and gently tapped the pocket where Julian had stashed the diamond engagement ring.
“That ring isn’t just a sentimental keepsake, Julian,” Elena whispered softly. “It’s fitted with a high-frequency micro-transmitter embedded in the platinum band by Vance Global’s R&D department. It’s the master proximity key for the estate’s secondary perimeter security override.”
Julian stared at her in stunned silence, his hand automatically dropping to his pocket to feel the hard edges of the ring.

“Victoria gave me the key back by pinning it to my lapel,” Julian breathed, the realization washing over him like a cold wave. “She didn’t just throw me out... she planted a beacon on me.”
