Chapter 10 - The Trap Springs Open

The heavy scent of damp earth and blossoming orchids seemed to thicken in the air as Victoria stepped out from the shadows of the central walkway. She wore a dark, heavy wool coat over her silk blouse, her dark brown hair tied back simply, and her pearl earrings catching the faint silver moonlight piercing the glass roof. She didn’t look surprised, nor did she look angry; her expression was one of cold, calculated amusement, as if she were watching a particularly predictable insect crawl across a polished tabletop.

Julian remained pressed flat against the glass wall behind the ferns, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He hadn’t made a sound, yet she had known he was there the moment he crossed the threshold.

“You always were remarkably predictable when desperate, Julian,” Victoria said, her voice echoing softly off the glass panes of the conservatory. She didn't turn her head to look directly at him, instead walking slowly toward the edge of the central fountain where they had stood just days before. “Did Elena Rostova really make you believe that a proximity chip in a retail engagement ring could override a military-grade biometric firewall?”

Julian stepped out from behind the ferns, his hands raised slightly in a defensive posture, though his eyes darted frantically toward the spiral staircase just feet away.

“You knew,” Julian breathed, his voice tight with frustration and betrayal. “The whole thing... the chip, the schematic, the entry code—it was all bait.”

Victoria turned slowly to face him. Her dark eyes gleamed with an intense, pitiless light.

“Of course it was bait, Julian,” Victoria replied, taking a measured step toward him. “Elena Rostova is a corporate raider on Vance Global’s payroll. She didn't hire you to steal my family vault; she hired you to give me the legal pretext required to charge you with felony trespassing and industrial espionage.”

Julian stared at her, the final pieces of the puzzle clicking into place with horrifying clarity. He had been played by both sides, manipulated like a puppet on a string from the very second he was thrown into the fountain.

“You destroyed my entire life over a spilled glass of champagne and a push,” Julian snarled, his voice rising in pitch as desperation finally overpowered his restraint. “You ruined my career, froze my accounts, and hunted me down like an animal just to satisfy your sadistic need for control!”

“You kicked my elderly mother onto the stone ground and left her weeping in the dirt,” Victoria replied, her voice dropping to a deadly, resonant whisper that cut through the humid air like a knife. “You broke my trust, stole from our pension funds, and tried to sell my intellectual property to my worst competitor. The champagne was just the catalyst that exposed the monster beneath the tuxedo.”

Julian lunged forward, moving with sudden, desperate speed toward the spiral staircase, hoping to reach the sublevel before security could close the doors. But before his fingers could grasp the iron railing, the conservatory doors flew open behind him with a loud crash.

Four security guards in black tactical gear flooded into the room, their heavy combat boots thudding against the stone floor. Before Julian could take another step, two pairs of strong hands grabbed his arms, pinning them behind his back with brutal efficiency and forcing him down onto his knees in the dirt.
