Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

The silence in the boardroom grew so dense that the low hum of the centralized air conditioning sounded like a distant jet engine. Julian’s fingers gripped the edge of the mahogany table so tightly that his knuckles turned ghostly white. The carefully constructed persona of the untouchable corporate wunderkind was splintering away, revealing the desperate, cornered man underneath. He looked around the table, seeking a sympathetic glance from old allies who had patted his back just forty-eight hours ago, but he found only averted gazes and rigid postures.
“You’re bluffing,” Julian muttered, his voice dropping an octave, losing its polished edge and revealing a raw, trembling panic. “You can’t just execute a corporate freeze without a federal magistrate’s signature. That takes weeks, months of bureaucratic red tape. We’re partners, Victoria! We share a history, a bed, a future!”
“We shared nothing that you didn’t attempt to monetize, Julian,” Victoria replied, her tone remaining chillingly clinical. She didn’t blink, maintaining unbroken eye contact that forced Julian to look away first. “And as for the magistrate’s signature, Judge Harrison is a lifelong friend of my late father. When I presented him with the wire transfers you made to your personal brother-in-law’s dummy corporation using company pension funds, he signed the warrant in twenty minutes.”
A collective intake of breath echoed around the table. The mention of pension funds crossed a line from corporate politics into outright criminal devastation. Several board members shifted uncomfortably in their leather chairs, suddenly realizing their own reputations were dangerously entangled with Julian’s sinking enterprise.
Arthur, the elderly estate butler who had quietly stepped into the boardroom carrying a leather briefcase, walked forward and placed a sealed white envelope directly on top of Julian’s dossier. Julian looked down at it, his throat tightening as if a physical hand were closing around his windpipe.
“What is this?” Julian demanded, his voice cracking slightly on the high note.
“Open it,” Victoria instructed quietly.
Julian’s shaking fingers tore at the paper flap. He pulled out a single, heavily stamped legal document. It was a notice of immediate eviction from his luxury penthouse apartment in downtown Manhattan—a property that, as it turned out, was entirely owned by a Vance family holding company, leased to him under false pretenses of corporate solvency.
“You... you’re throwing me out on the street?” Julian whispered, looking up with eyes wide with disbelief and horror. “All my belongings are in that penthouse. My clothes, my vault, my private papers!”
“Your belongings are currently being packed into cardboard boxes by movers stationed in your lobby right now,” Victoria stated calmly, glancing at her diamond-encrusted wristwatch. “You have exactly two hours to collect your personal effects before the locks are changed permanently.”
Julian slammed his palms onto the table and pushed himself up, his chair screeching loudly against the hardwood floor.

“You’ll regret this, Victoria!” Julian shouted, his composure completely shattering as he pointed a trembling finger at her. “You think you’ve won, but you don’t know who I’ve been dealing with behind your back!”
