Chapter 9 - The Dust Settles on Maple Street

The shockwave knocked Claire flat onto the damp grass of the overgrown backyard, the wooden clipboard flying from her hands and skidding across the frosted lawn. She pushed herself up, coughing violently as the thick grey cloud of pulverized drywall and earth settled over the ruins of Maple Street. Where three houses had stood just minutes before, there was now a smooth, concave depression in the earth, the structures having collapsed neatly inward into the subterranean caverns below.
Across the freshly graded expanse of grey earth, the black SUV idled heavily, its headlights cutting twin beams through the lingering dust. The doors swung open simultaneously. The two secret service-style bodyguards stepped out first, their hands resting near their holstered weapons, followed by Arthur.
Arthur’s tailored grey suit was covered in a fine layer of white plaster dust, and his hair was wildly out of place. The polished, untouchable bureaucrat was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate man whose career had just evaporated beneath a collapsing suburban block. He walked slowly across the uneven ground, his eyes fixed entirely on Claire as she retrieved her clipboard from the grass.
"You destroyed the physical evidence," Arthur said, his voice raw and breathless as he stopped ten feet away from her. "The underground servers are buried under twenty feet of rubble. Without the physical logbook, it's just your word against the municipal council."
Claire straightened up, brushing the dirt from the dark fabric of her trench coat. She held the large wooden clipboard firmly against her chest, the papers pinned securely beneath the heavy metal clip. She didn't look at the collapsed sinkhole behind her; she looked directly into Arthur’s panicked eyes.
"The logbook was never the evidence, Arthur," Claire said, her voice carrying clearly over the idling engine of the SUV. "It was the decoy. The real audit was uploaded to the federal oversight committee the moment your men kicked in the front door."
Arthur stopped dead in his tracks. Before he could formulate a response, the low, rhythmic thrum of helicopter blades cut through the cold evening air above them. Two heavy transport choppers bearing the dark green insignia of the federal inspector general broke through the low-hanging cloud cover, dropping rapidly into the cul-de-sac and kicking up a blinding gale of wind and dust.
Spotlights from the aircraft flooded the entire street in brilliant white light, pinning Arthur and his bodyguards in the open. The doors of the leading chopper slid open, and armed federal marshals in tactical gear descended fast ropes onto the pavement, weapons ready.
Arthur slowly raised his hands, looking from the descending marshals back to Claire, his face draining of all remaining color as the reality of his situation set in.

"You think this stops with me?" Arthur whispered bitterly, his voice barely audible over the roaring chop of the rotors. "The Board has fifty more districts lined up for clearance next month. You saved one street, Claire. You haven't stopped the machine."
