Chapter 5 - The Secret Beneath the Foundation

The beam of the tactical flashlight sliced through the dusty air of the basement, painting pale circles of light across exposed concrete foundations, rusted support beams, and rows of stacked plastic storage bins. Claire pressed herself flat against the damp brick wall behind the shipping crates, her fingers digging into the rough mortar. Above her, heavy boots creaked on the top landing of the wooden stairs.
"Check the perimeter of the foundation," Arthur’s voice echoed faintly from the kitchen above, distorted by the concrete architecture. "She couldn't have gone far. The back exit is welded shut."
The beam swept past her hiding spot once more, illuminating the large wooden clipboard clutched tightly in her arms. The silver metal clip gleamed dully in the reflected light. For a terrifying second, the beam lingered on the edge of her dark trench coat, casting a shadow that stretched across the floor. Claire closed her eyes, regulating her breathing to the absolute minimum, feeling the cold air burn her lungs.
Then, the footsteps retreated toward the stairs, and the basement door clicked shut, plunging the subterranean space back into total, oppressive gloom.
Claire let out a long, silent exhale, but she didn't move. The rhythmic clicking sound she had heard from the stairwell earlier returned—quieter now, but steady, like the ticking of an oversized mechanical clock. She slowly stood up, brushing plaster dust from her knees, and crept toward the back corner of the basement where the sound originated.
As her eyes adjusted to the dim ambient light filtering through a high, barred window near the ceiling, the shape of the room began to take form. This wasn't a standard residential basement. The far wall had been broken through, opening into a massive subterranean tunnel lined with industrial-grade cabling and concrete reinforcement rings. A series of blinking red LED lights blinked in sequence down the tunnel, illuminating a row of heavy-duty computer mainframes humming quietly in the dark.
Claire stepped through the jagged breach in the foundation, her boots crunching softly on broken brick. She raised the wooden clipboard, using the papers clipped to it as a makeshift hard surface, and pulled a small penlight from her coat pocket. She clicked it on, sweeping the narrow beam across the control panels of the nearest mainframe.
The screens were active, displaying real-time seismic data and chemical composition readouts of the soil beneath District Seven. But it was the open window on the central monitor that made her blood run cold. It was a live video feed, transmitting a clear, high-definition image of the front porch she had been standing on just ten minutes ago.

And sitting right there on the porch rail, staring directly into the hidden camera with a cold, knowing smirk, was Arthur.
