Chapter 4 - Shadows Within the Hollow Walls

The interior of the house smelled of damp drywall, old dust, and the unmistakable metallic tang of stale water pooling in the basement. Claire pressed her back hard against the inside of the locked door, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Outside, muffled by thick oak and deadbolts, Arthur’s voice cut through the silence, sharp and furious.

"Break the glass!" Arthur commanded the bodyguards. "Get that door open before she reaches the rear exit!"

Claire didn't wait to hear the shattering of the sidelight windows. She turned and ran down the narrow, unlit hallway, clutching the wooden clipboard to her chest with one arm while using her free hand to feel along the peeling wallpaper for guidance. The electricity had been cut months ago, plunging the interior into a twilight gloom illuminated only by the pale grey light filtering through dirty windows.

She reached the kitchen, where overturned chairs and a layer of dust covered the linoleum floor. Through the rear window, she could see the continuation of Maple Street curving into the industrial park, where massive earthmovers and construction cranes stood silent against the darkening sky. But her path was blocked; a heavy industrial padlock had been welded onto the back door from the outside, sealing the exit completely.

A loud crash echoed from the front of the house as the sidelight glass gave way to the heavy boots of the bodyguards. They were inside. The sound of their confident, measured footsteps padded across the hardwood floor of the living room, methodical and entirely unstressed. They knew she had nowhere to run.

Claire spun around, her eyes scanning the dim room for an alternative. Her gaze landed on the basement door standing slightly ajar in the dark hallway pantry. A cold draft billowed up from the subterranean depths, carrying with it a strange, rhythmic clicking sound that didn't sound like dripping water or scurrying rodents.

Footsteps approached the kitchen entrance. The shadow of a broad-shouldered man fell across the linoleum floor, stretching long and distorted toward her feet. Without hesitation, Claire pulled open the basement door, slipped into the dark stairwell, and pulled the wooden door shut behind her just as a hand grabbed the outer frame.

She tumbled down the steep wooden steps in the pitch black, biting her lip to keep from crying out as her shin struck the sharp edge of a concrete riser. Landing hard on the damp basement floor, she scrambled behind a stack of wooden shipping crates, holding her breath. Above her, the basement door creaked open slowly, and the beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight cut through the darkness, sweeping across the concrete floor just inches from her hiding spot.
