Chapter 7

The heavy steel doors of the manifold chamber buckled inward with a violent crash as a plasma charge melted through the reinforced locking bolts. Vance fired three rapid rounds into the opening, catching the first advancing guard in the chest and sending him tumbling back into the corridor. But more were pouring in behind him, laying down a devastating hail of suppressive fire that forced Vance to dive behind a heavy steel control console for cover. Sparks flew in blinding showers as energy bolts chewed through the metal casing inches from his head. "Savannah, hurry!" he shouted, wincing as a stray plasma round scorched the shoulder of his immaculate military uniform, burning through the fabric and searing the skin beneath.

At the main console, Savannah ignored the chaos erupting around her, her focus locked entirely on the cascading lines of golden code she was manually injecting into the manifold's central processor. The Chrono-Key in her hand grew scorching hot, burning against her skin, but she refused to let go. Suddenly, the chaotic red lines on the holographic timeline display began to shift, turning a steady, soothing cyan as her mother's encoded security matrix took hold of the system. A familiar voice—soft, clear, and unmistakably synthetic—echoed quietly from the console’s integrated speakers: “Counter-frequency accepted. Welcome back, Helen.” Savannah gasped, her eyes widening in disbelief as a translucent, shimmering holographic projection of her mother materialized directly above the console interface.

The projection of Helen looked down at her daughter with a gentle, sorrowful smile, her white collared shirt and blonde hair rendered in crisp, glowing light. "You did it, my baby," Helen's voice whispered softly, carrying across the massive chamber over the roar of the manifold. "You found the core." Vance peeked out from behind his cover, staring up at the projection with stunned amazement. "Helen? Is that... a residual AI imprint?" The projection turned its gaze toward the general, shaking its head slightly. "Not an AI, Vance. A failsafe. I routed my neural map into the Chrono-Key moments before the physical collapse in the lobby. I couldn't let you face Cole alone." The heavy doors at the entrance finally gave way completely, crashing inward as Director Cole strode into the chamber, flanked by half a dozen heavily armed operatives.

Cole stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting from Vance to the massive glowing manifold, and finally resting on the glowing holographic projection of Helen hovering above the console. A slow, dark smile crept across the director's face. "How poetic," Cole sneered, unholstering his own sleek sidearm and stepping forward. "The ghost in the machine, trying to save a world that was already meant to burn." He raised his weapon, pointing the barrel squarely at Savannah's chest. "Step away from the console, child. End of the line." Savannah slowly turned her head to look at Cole, her green eyes burning with an intense, unyielding fury that caused the director to hesitate for a fraction of a second. She didn't flinch. She simply smiled, lifted her hand, and pressed the final execution key on the console.
