Chapter 4

The Central Chronology Institute loomed against the stormy night sky like an austere monument to human hubris. Its towering glass facade, usually gleaming with pristine corporate efficiency, was now marred by deep scorch marks and shattered windowpanes from the earlier skirmish. General Vance crouched behind the low stone wall of the perimeter garden, his binoculars pressed against his eyes as he scanned the main entrance. Two armored sentries in matte-black tactical gear stood guard beneath the portico, their heavy assault rifles resting lazily across their chests. They were bored, relying entirely on the automated perimeter sensors to do their jobs. But Vance knew those sensors were already blinded; Savannah had spent the last hour during their silent approach looping the facility's security feeds with a malicious code upload via a portable datapad.
"Ready?" Vance whispered, turning his head slightly toward the shadow where Savannah stood blending into the ivy-covered brick wall. She nodded silently, her red-and-white checkered dress barely visible in the gloom. Without a sound, she slipped the Chrono-Key from her pocket, letting the device project a faint, sub-audible frequency that jammed the local communication channels of the two sentries. As the guards simultaneously reached up to their helmets with confused expressions, static crackling loudly in their earpieces, Vance moved with the terrifying speed of a seasoned combat veteran. He vaulted the low wall, crossing the open courtyard in a matter of seconds, and neutralized both guards with swift, silent precision before their bodies could even hit the polished stone steps.

Savannah trotted up beside him, stepping carefully around the fallen guards as Vance punched the emergency override code into the heavy titanium side doors. The heavy locks disengaged with a dull, pneumatic thud, and the doors swung inward, revealing the cavernous, dimly lit lobby beyond. It was here, just a few hundred yards down the corridor on the pristine white marble floor, that her mother had breathed her last breath. Savannah paused on the threshold, her breath catching in her throat as the memory rushed over her with crushing force. She could still see the phantom stain of blood on the gleaming white tiles, could still feel the agonizing warmth of Helen's fading pulse beneath her fingertips. Vance placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, guiding her gently past the threshold and into the heart of the enemy's domain.
Inside, the Institute was dead silent, save for the rhythmic, ominous hum of the sub-basement reactors pulling massive amounts of electrical grid power. They moved swiftly down the sterile corridors, past rows of locked laboratories and dormant observation decks, following the pulsing indigo light of the Chrono-Key. As they approached the primary elevator bank, the red emergency lighting overhead suddenly shifted to a glaring, baleful amber. A synthesized female voice echoed smoothly from the overhead intercom speakers: “Intruders detected in Sector Four. Lockdown protocols initiated. All unauthorized personnel will be terminated on sight.” Heavy steel blast shutters slammed down from the ceiling at both ends of the corridor, trapping them in a narrow, inescapable hallway with nowhere to run.
