Chapter 14

The cavernous turbine hall fell into a profound, echoing silence as the temporal rift finally snapped shut, leaving behind only the normal, ambient sounds of the rusting industrial ruins and the cool draft of air blowing through the broken roof panels above. The titanium device on the console clicked softly, its glowing blue light fading into a calm, steady grey as its mission was fully accomplished. Arthur let out a long breath, wiping a smear of soot from his forehead with the back of his hand, and walked over to stand beside Savannah at the edge of the gantry. Together, they looked down at the empty concrete floor where the shimmering vortex had stood only moments before.
As they watched, a soft, warm golden glow began to emanate from the base of the console, coalescing into a familiar, translucent holographic projection that hovered gently in the air between them. Helen looked down at her daughter and Arthur, her expression radiant with a deep, everlasting peace, her white collared shirt and blonde hair shining with gentle light. "You did it," Helen’s voice whispered softly, carrying across the massive hall with crystal clarity. "The loop is broken. The manifold is completely stable. There are no more fractures left to heal." Savannah felt tears prick the corners of her eyes, but this time they were not tears of grief or pain, but of profound, overwhelming release. She smiled up at the projection, her heart feeling lighter than it ever had in her entire life.
"We finished what you started, Mom," Savannah said, her voice steady and clear, echoing softly in the quiet room. Arthur placed a warm, heavy hand on Savannah’s shoulder, nodding respectfully toward the projection of the woman who had sacrificed everything to save the future. "You can rest now, Helen," Arthur added, his voice thick with emotion. "We've got the watch from here." Helen’s projection smiled warmly, her form slowly beginning to dissolve into a gentle shower of golden light that drifted upward toward the broken roof, blending seamlessly into the natural morning sunlight streaming down from the clear sky above. The ghost in the machine was finally gone, returning to the infinite, beautiful tapestry of a world at peace.
