Chapter 5

The metallic echo of the blast shutters slamming into the floor reverberated through the narrow corridor like the tolling of a funeral bell. General Vance immediately dropped to one knee, bringing his pulse rifle up to his shoulder and sweeping the length of the hall toward the descending ceiling vents. "They knew we were coming," Vance growled, his eyes narrowing as red laser sights began to paint the white walls around them. "This whole approach was monitored from the start." Savannah didn't panic. She stepped calmly past the general, holding the glowing Chrono-Key out in front of her like a compass. The device was vibrating violently now, its blue light shifting rapidly into a brilliant, warning violet as the ambient temperature in the corridor dropped sharply, signaling an imminent spatial tear.

"They aren't trying to capture us," Savannah said, her voice unnaturally calm as she watched the security cameras pivoting to lock directly onto their position. "Cole wants the Chrono-Key. If he takes it from my hands, the resonance loop will complete automatically, and the reset wave will wipe this entire century from the timeline." Before Vance could formulate a tactical response, the reinforced steel wall directly ahead of them hissed and slid smoothly into the ceiling. Director Cole stepped out from the shadows of the subterranean laboratory beyond, flanked by four heavily armored elite guards carrying directional energy shields. Cole wore a crisp, dark grey civilian suit that looked entirely out of place in the ruined facility, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the harsh glare of the emergency lights as he smiled thinly.

"General Vance," Cole said smoothly, his voice dripping with condescentious amusement as he stopped a safe distance away. "And little Savannah. I must admit, your persistence is almost admirable. Your mother gave her life for a lost cause, child. She thought she could smuggle you out of the nexus and hide you in the rubble of history. But history always corrects itself." Vance stood up slowly, keeping his rifle leveled at Cole’s chest despite the four energy weapons trained squarely on his heart. "You're insane, Cole," Vance spat out, his jaw clenched tight. "If you trigger the reset, you won't just erase us—you'll destabilize the entire temporal manifold. Billions of lives will be instantly unmade." Cole merely chuckled, waving a dismissive hand as if swatting away an annoying insect.

"Progress requires sacrifice, General," Cole replied, his eyes fixing hungrily on the glowing device in Savannah's hand. "And the current timeline is deeply flawed. Look at this world—wars, poverty, endless suffering. I am simply offering humanity a clean slate." He took a slow step forward, holding out an open palm. "Hand over the key, Savannah, and I will let the old man walk out of here alive. You can live out your days in peace under our direct supervision." Savannah looked down at the Chrono-Key, feeling the intense thrum of energy coursing through its metallic casing. She slowly raised her head, looking straight into Cole's cold, calculating eyes with a fierce, unwavering defiance that made the director's confident smile falter for the briefest of seconds.
