Chapter 5

The arrival of the paramedics interrupted their tense conversation. Two medical professionals in crisp blue uniforms entered quietly, performing a comprehensive check on little Lily while she slept in her crib upstairs. Her oxygen saturation levels were stable, her heart rate steady, and the physical trauma of the near-choking incident had subsided. After giving David a stern reminder to keep a close watch and promising to file their own mandatory welfare report, the paramedics packed their gear and departed into the cool night air.

Downstairs once more, David sat at his sleek glass-top desk in the corner of the living room, his laptop glowing brightly in the dim light. Sarah stood beside him, holding a thick leather-bound binder containing every household expense report, medical supply invoice, and philanthropic donation receipt from the past thirty-six months.

"Let's look at the quarterly disbursements for the pediatric respiratory research grants," David muttered, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced speed. The screen populated with endless rows of financial data, corporate entities, and Swiss bank routing numbers.

As they cross-referenced the physical receipts Sarah had salvaged from the recycling over the past year with the digital bank statements, a horrifying pattern emerged. Elena hadn't just been skimming funds; she had systematically hollowed out the core trust established by Lily’s late mother, redirecting hundreds of thousands of dollars into offshore shell companies under the guise of specialized medical treatments that never actually existed. Worse still, she had substituted several batches of Lily’s prescribed therapeutic grade oxygen with industrial-grade blends that caused micro-inflammation in the toddler’s lungs—a slow, untraceable method designed to mimic the natural progression of her degenerative condition.

David stared at the screen, a suffocating wave of guilt crashing over him. He had trusted Elena completely. While he worked eighty-hour weeks to pay for the exorbitant medical bills, the woman he shared his bed with was slowly murdering his daughter from the inside out, masking malice as maternal devotion.

"She wasn't just trying to inherit my wealth, Sarah," David whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and blinding rage. "She was engineering Lily’s death so it looked like natural heart failure due to the disease."

Sarah placed a comforting hand on David’s rigid shoulder. "We have the video of tonight, sir. And now we have the paper trail. We take this straight to the financial crimes division first thing in the morning. But tonight, you need to be with your daughter."
