Chapter 14

The courtroom of the federal district courthouse was packed to capacity on a crisp autumn morning. Photographers crowded the stone steps outside, while inside, the atmosphere was thick with quiet anticipation. David sat in the front row between Evelyn and Sarah, his posture calm and resolute. Across the aisle, Elena sat at the defense table, dressed in a standard orange jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a simple braid, her expression hardened into a mask of bitter defiance as she awaited the reading of the jury’s verdict.

The presiding judge adjusted his spectacles, scanning the official parchment handed up by the jury foreperson. The trial had lasted four grueling weeks, during which the prosecution presented the digital video evidence frame by frame, the financial audits tracking millions in embezzled funds, and the definitive forensic toxicology reports proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Elena had poisoned Clara and systematically sabotaged Lily’s medical treatments.

"In the matter of the State versus Elena Vance," the judge announced, his deep voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "On the first count of capital murder in the death of Clara Vance, how does the jury find?"

"Guilty, Your Honor," the foreperson responded clearly.

"On the second count of attempted premeditated murder in the case of minor dependent Lily Vance, how does the jury find?"

"Guilty, Your Honor."

"On all remaining counts of grand larceny, financial conspiracy, and systemic medical endangerment, how does the jury find?"

"Guilty on all charges, Your Honor."

A collective murmur rippled through the gallery, but David remained entirely silent. He didn't feel triumph or vindication; he simply felt a deep, profound sense of closure. He looked across the aisle at Elena. She didn't look back; her eyes were fixed straight ahead, staring blankly at the wooden wall as the reality of multiple consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole finally settled over her.

When the court was adjourned, David walked out of the double doors into the bright autumn sunlight, flanked by Evelyn and Sarah. The media cameras flashed like distant lightning, but he ignored them, focusing entirely on the future waiting for him back home.
