Chapter 13

Three weeks later, the penthouse was filled with the soft, joyful sounds of life returning to normal. Sunlight poured through the large glass windows, warming the hardwood floors where little Lily, now dressed in a bright yellow sundress, sat playing with a collection of colorful wooden blocks. The clear oxygen mask was still gently secured over her face, its tubing connected to a quiet, modernized concentrator humming unobtrusively in the corner, but her cheeks held a healthy, rosy glow that hadn't been there in years.

David sat on the plush sofa nearby, reviewing the final legal documents finalizing the complete dissolution of his marriage to Elena and the full restoration of Clara’s trust endowments to a new pediatric research foundation bearing Lily’s name. The criminal trial was scheduled for the upcoming autumn, but with Thorne’s complete confession and the irrefutable forensic evidence from Clara’s exhumation, legal experts agreed that a guilty verdict on all counts of capital murder and attempted child endangerment was guaranteed.

Evelyn walked into the living room carrying a tray of fresh lemonade, setting it down on the glass coffee table before kneeling beside Lily to help her stack a tall tower of blocks. The toddler giggled, her green eyes sparkling with happiness as the blocks tumbled down in a clatter of painted wood.

"You've been working all morning, David," Evelyn said gently, looking up at her son-in-law with an expression of deep, hard-won affection. "Take a break. Lily wants to show you her new drawing."

David smiled, laying the legal papers aside and joining them on the rug. He scooped Lily up into his arms, carefully adjusting her oxygen line as she threw her tiny arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder. He closed his eyes, inhaling the sweet scent of baby shampoo, feeling a profound sense of peace wash over him. The nightmare was finally over. The shadows cast by Elena’s calculated cruelty had been driven out by the relentless pursuit of truth and justice.

Sarah walked in from the kitchen, holding a tablet with her scheduling notes. "Mr. Vance, the board members for the new medical foundation are scheduled for a video call at three o'clock to finalize the endowment transfer."

"Tell them I'll be there, Sarah," David replied, kissing the top of Lily's blonde curls. "And thank you. For everything."
